Best Japanese food I have tasted so far

I have been to this place countless times and every time it is an extremely pleasant and gastronomic experience. I am a big sashimi fan and the sashimi here is really fresh. It is also chilled to the right temperature, bringing out a refreshing flavor. The sushi rice is also delicious, with light saucing and gourds chopped into it. This is the first time I have had such aromatic and tasty sushi rice. I could easily eat a whole bowl of nothing but this rice.

However, the down side is that this place is expensive. A chirashi costs $50 and sashimi for 2 costs $100. However, you will soon forget about the price when your stomach is full of true-blue japanese cuisine of great quality. For people on a budget, don't fret cause they have affordable lunch sets at $25. These give you sashimi, tempura, udon and much more, including fruits. The sets are probably a good way for you to find out what you like so you can order it ala carte when pay day comes :)

Service is excellent as waiters are very friendly and attentive to your needs. They usually realize before you do if something is missing from your table and expediently give it to you.

Be sure make a reservation if you want a table since it gets very crowded during lunch. Otherwise, you may have to sit at the counter, which is not a downside for some people. I'm not too sure about dinner, but better to be safe than sorry.

Overall, I highly recommend this place for the sophisticated japanese food lover who wouldn't mind paying for fresh, juicy sashimi and unique sushi rice.

regular haunt (i wish only)

I tend to be at the sushi bar here now and then for the occasional sushi and sashimi with the wife/friends/colleagues. Sushi counter is always the best place to be to watch the chefs at work.

The owner/master chef Mr Ronnie is always affable and easy to chat with. The chef Sasakesan is as usual, the master at coming up with melt-in-mouth sashimi/sushi to suit whatever fresh fm the import.
every piece of sushi/sashimi is awesome.

My comfort food place.
Okay, it can be very pricey but I heard the set lunches are good value.

Forgiven

After that unpleasant episode, I admit I did return subsequently for a few visits to let this place redress its lapse and the distress it had caused me the previous time. :)

Once I had the Ladies Set Lunch ($26.80) because of the promise of a dainty portion of chilled inaniwa udon amongst some delightful sushi, maki and other goodies. Naturally, the noodles were bouncy and smooth textured. I love cold noodles! :)

I also had a green salad doused with wafu dressing to get going. Then 4 different types of sushi, a thick spongy Tatsuya’s “signature” tamago and another 2 pieces of simple yet pleasing California maki roll. The tempura came in a form of a prawn cake, wispy and grease-free. I very much enjoyed the chawanmushi too. Though unadorned, the egg custard was silkenly smooth and enlivened with a touch of yuzu.

On another visit, I had the Sushi Bento ($30.90) delicately presented in a stylish lacquered box . There were 6 attractive pieces of uber fresh sushi. Swimmingly fresh slices of sashimi were complemented by delicate wads of vinegared rice. The salmon belly sushi was especially delicious. My tuna-kanpachi-kappa maki roll was also pleasingly enveloped in the crispest nori sheets, tempura batter light and california roll just as good as before if not more enjoyable. The tamagoyaki sweetish, spongy and fluffy. It’s one of the best renditions in town. Loves.

I plead guilty to my reservations about this place in the past. Maybe it was just me but I thought there was this pristine hoity-toity bearing about this place that I didn’t like. All that’s since resolved. These recent visits were truly rejuvenating, especially so when I see the sushi chefs meticulously adding final flourishes to my sushi, and the occasional frivolous banter exchange amidst the bravura awe-rendering brandishes of their sushi knives.

Business Lunch

I believe the reason why they offer such great prices during weekday lunches is because they are far from the Raffles Place crowd. I met up with my insurance agent and suggested the place after reading the recommendation in this month's Simply Her.

At $20+ to $30+ per set lunch, it is quite a decent offering. The place is quite particular on reservations so be sure to book before going. We didn't and ended up sitting alfresco. Doesn't seem crowded to us but oh well..

The service is not top notch nor hotel service standard but for Shenton crowd, they will understand what is service standard in CBD area during lunch time. That's exactly it.

However, the green tea is topped up regularly. The staff are non-Singaporeans, meaning that I have to speak Mandarin to have my order taken as the waitress's command of English is not up to par. I ordered the main bento set, which come with sushi and tempura. I have to say that it is ok. not bad, but not wow. The sushi is fresh and the tuna is extremely reddish. The slices are generous and suitable for ladies. The rice is minimum with a large slab of fish on top, so I was happy.

I don't mind going there again as it is a break from the mad rush in Raffles Place.

Very reasonable set lunches, even during the weekend

With very generous set lunches at $25-30, Tatsuya offers real value for money.

The food is well prepared and the raw fish is fresh, and I was particularly tickled by how they 'branded' one of their egg dishes with the restaurant name.

At prices like that, I didn't really have anything to complain about, except (and this is really just nitpicking) that there could have been more sets to choose from. (There were, I think, about 8.)
