petite english cakes

Who would haf thought dat a place inside an attic would service scones, coffee n some petite english cakes? I would not have gone there if i have not read these reviews as it is a hidden find.

Basically this is like a small little cafe or counter inside a shop which sells coffee, scones, some mains n high-tea. I looked throu d menu n only find 3 types of desserts. They r the choc cake wif ice-cream, ebony n ivory n dessert platter for 1(consists of 5 different mini cakes). I did not choose the first 2 is becos they were just choc n brownies... nth special. The dessert platter i got was the carrot cake, choc fudge, s/berry mousse, tiramisu n choc brownie. But, i told the person dat i dun wan any nuts n thus he change d carrot cake to a brownie of different taste. ThKS!

Must Tries: Dessert platter for 1

Cosy with Sunny Smile

After a long meeting, I was trying to find some comforting food to feed my hungry stomach. I decided to try out Tea Cosy Located on the 5th Floor of Plaza Singapura, you can find this cosy café inside Eclectic Attic – A Vintage Heaven for vintage lovers.

I was there around 8-ish; only 1 table was occupied, so I get the little privilege to choose where to sit, so I chose the little corner at near the pink painted wall.

Orders were simple

1. Foie Gras Taster $11.95 (my order)
2. Tangy Tomato w Crabmeat Soup $8.95 (my order)
3. Rose Blossom Tea $4.50 (friend)

The soup was serve piping hot with a nice aroma, however this dark orangey hue soup don’t really taste as good as it sound. The soup is not tangy enough, in fact not tangy at all. Slightly too salty for my palate but I do like the crabmeat in it and I wish there were more to balance the taste.

The Foie Gras Taster, come on a plate with 4 porcelain spoons each, spoon have a leaf of baby lettuce, topped with a mini piece of mandarin orange (I think) and foie gras. Serving was generous for the price of $11.95; you get a decent bit of foie gras on each spoon, say about 3 bites per spoon. No wow-factors for me, however at this price I believe it can temporary satisfy the craving for fatty liver at real time.(for me at least)

Overall a pretty nice and cosy place for me, the food is okay, but the service made the whole experience a better one. A special thanks to the 3 gentlemen (1 from the retail and 2 from the café) for your warm service and sunny smile.

Not decadent at all...

Heard so much about the decadent salad so have to drop in to try.

Service was extremely slow in the tea time period with only one person doing all the service, ordering, as well as billing and busing. Hire some help if you want to do tea time business. It is just too damn agonizing to keep waiting for the lone server to appear... Rootbeer took a decade and the salad took another....so bloody long. The salad which came with 5 prawns and 3 tiny cubes of foie gras was hardly decadent. Salad ends starting to brown a little which tells me the greens ain't too fresh. The prawns were pan fried but over cooked so it is a little on the dry side - ain't impressed. The foie gras while tasty plays too little a role in the salad that I feel it serves no impact other than to have any excuse to claim "there is foie gras in the salad". If $16.95 doesn't cover the cost of adding more foie gras then charge more. I rather pay more and get a decent portion than 3 tiny bits that gets lost in the whole scheme of the dish.....

Rootbeer is nice though - no its not A&W or Mug. What a saving grace in fact! I have not had this brand of rootbeer for soooo long. =) Honestly, I rather pay $16.95 for the rootbeer than the salad which leaves me feeling pissed off - I can live without foie gras but once you start you have to have enough or the feeling just sucks.....

Ambience is just too chaotic for me. The tables are shaky and the chairs are just plain uncomfortable. I guess some people will find the "antique" theme charming but to me it is just "junk". Well one man's junk is another man's treasure...tea cosy is not my cup of tea.

Must Tries: Kemper rootbeer

vintage haven; electic Attic - tea cosy

One would definitely cast a quizzical look upon seeing this shop. It's tucked away neatly across a row of shops, in a corner at Plaza Singapura, level 5.
Electic Attic, house not only vintage furniture, lamps, cutlery, chinas, vintage accessories but a cafe too? (tea cosy)

Now, how would a cafe fit into this place? It seem almost out of place; imagine dining, and sitting on furniture that is actually up for sale. Rather peculiar, no? You have got to experience it yourself. EA's stock are limited and mostly it's one-of-a-kind vintage finds. If you're into vintage stuffs, you should give them a visit.

Okay, back to the foodie issue. I had the set lunch; a 3 course meal, which consists of either mushroom soup or you can upgrade it to crab broth with additional charge of $5, pork burger or chicken pasta (penne), and english mini cakes. You will have a choice to include premium tea or coffee with additional charges of $25?

Feeling adventurous and less halal then, i decided to go for mushroom soup and pork burger. The soup came right after 10 minutes or so. It's rather bland in my opinion, and there nothing special about it. My pork burger was up next, served with chips (which i suspect it's actually LAYS chips) and a small portion of salad. I thought the pork burger tasted rather generic, like those pre-packed, frozen patty which you can get from supermarket. And it's just plain. The salad (a mixture of diced carrot, cucumber and asparagus?) was good though. Last but not least, the english mini cakes! This is probably the only decent food they can offer. There's 2 pieces, one carrot cake and chocolate cake coated with chocolate fudge.

My friend ordered chicken pasta and crab broth. According to his tastes bud, it's good. I'm a sceptic, so bite me. I tried both and thought it's only passable as edible food and nothing more than that.

It's rather disappointing what this cafe can offer. Then again, it's probably not about the food here, but the charm of the shop itself. This is definitely one place you have to be there only to experience the charm of it. Oh, by the way, EA (tea cosy) offers wine as well.

Tea Cosy - A HGW Outing

Nestled inside a shop called Eclectic Attic, that sells all things vintage sorts of collectibles, antiques and clothes and accessories to furniture and knick-knacks, you will find Tea Cosy. At first glance, one may miss Tea Cosy as the whole shop décor here is intentionally messy, making the place feel like an attic. A little crammed and cluttered, the cafe area is barely noticeable amidst all the objects in the place. But when one takes the trouble to peer inside, you will realise that they had place settings at the tables. You will be astound to realise that everything in the cafe is for sale besides the food you dine – from the decorations on the table, including the bell to ring for service (and it doesn’t come cheap mind you), to the wooden chairs that we were sitting on – talk about experiential home furnish shopping!

Starter was the Home-made Creamy Mushroom Soup. Every spoonful comes with generous bits of mushrooms although I rather prefer them in thick and big slices – quality for quantity. Soup was also slightly on the salty side. Surprisingly what I felt was better was the piece of toast that went along with it. It was toasted with Mayonnaise that gave it a sweet creamy taste, something different from the normal toast that comes with soup.

The Decadent Salad consists of Foie Gras, Prawns and Eggs. One of Tea Cosy’s reputed dishes – my expectation of it was heightened – although it didn’t wow me, expectations of a salad was met. The vegetables were fresh and the dressing was a good compliment to it, but the prawns could have been juicier and foie gras bigger.

Not sinfully satisfied, I opted for the Signatured Pan-fried Foie Gras as the main. Topped with pineapples and aragula leaves and with what tasted like orange marmalade on the side, the foie gras goes well with the juices from the pineapple and aragula to create a bittersweet combination, but on its own, the oily aftertaste wasn’t exactly pleasant. This is not the best rendition I have tasted but Tea Cosy is the cheaper option if one does not have a big pocket to burn but still crave for some sinful delight.

Not filling enough, we ordered an extra serving of Laksa Pesto to share that comes with quite a few prawns, and is said to be of reminiscent to Wild Rockets rendition – amidst more watery. Coming to the end of the dish however, one will probably find the gravy extremely salty due to the residues of the dried shrimps used for it. To be honest I wasn’t impressed with this dish.

We wrapped up the night with some desserts that I felt the portion was more suitable for their High Tea – petite. They were nothing extraordinary, and probably the only thing that impresses me was the name used for the chocolate brownie with ice-cream combi – Ebony and Ivory.
