"I hate food courts cuz they can't cook!"
  1. Best value for money Teochew food. Master chef here!

    Feb 5, 2007
Cannot believe your web site has this place listed. But since you have it, i will share with everyone. I discovered this place via a TV ad just 1+ months ago. Since then, I have brought over 10 people here to eat on about 5 occasions. That is like once a week. Reason?

The food is damn good for a neighbourhood place. And the chef can standard. Here are some stuff that are really yummy here.

    1) Fish maw claypot soup.
    2) Shark meat with jelly (cold dish). Yes, it is that exotic.
    3) Yam strips cooked with ice sugar. Dessert like yam paste but more fun
    4) Cabbage stewed in superior sauce. Nice.
    5) Even their simple fried meesua is good.

Warning though, service is nothing to speak about. China PRC staff who are quite erratic. Though if you come regularly, they are nicer and if you order expensive stuff, they are also nicer.

Will definitely come back! again and agian since it is 5min from my place. And they are open 24 hours.
I also recommend this place for

    • Come eat here! Sure good!

      Apr 28, 2007
Came here again last night with family. Absolutely loved the standard of food! Service still very PRC but hey it is a neighbourhood restaurant in Bukit Batok. We ordered :

      1) Steamed Sea bass live. FANTASTIC! Chef steamed it to perfection. Just cooked and extremely fresh and they serve it teochew style with tao jiur. Try !!!

      2) The Imperial Treasure Claypot. This one always good. It is a claypot of sea cucumber, mushroom, pacific clam etc. Very yummy.

      3) Brocolli with prawns. This one quite average but well done still.

      4) Egg with bitter gourd. This one for my 2 kids who love eggs.

1 bottle tiger to wash it down. Over all an excellent meal and the service was better this time though they still took ages to serve the egg. PRC service standard. But i am beginning to know them and they warm up....

:) Price was $105 for 2 kids, wife, me and help.

      • Very annoyed with service

        May 31, 2009
I appreciate that restaurant staff should be profit conscious and have the ability to upsell by marketing their premium dishes or tempting you to have dessert. But there is a fine line, and as a customer, being put on the defensive certainly takes away from the dining experience.

My family of about ten people have been to Teochew Restaurant a number of times. Good eats, no doubt. We especially like the fish soup and braised duck.

However, we are consistently annoyed with the way they not only push the most expensive items during ordering, but also serve more than would be necessary for the group size. With each trip, we have become wiser about their portions, but unfortunately it's never as straightforward as we would like it to be. For example, their small char kway is the same size as the medium ee fu noodle. Good knowledge to have for the next visit, but are we really expected to learn their range of portions for the whole menu? We prefer to trust that restaurant managers possess fair judgement in recommending portion sizes.

Tonight, in good faith again, I did not specify a size for the eight dishes I ordered, including a prawn dish that was recommended. And for that, I was punished. A long time after we nearly polished off the seven dishes that arrived first, all much larger than we needed, the prawn dish arrived. All 1kg of it - surprise, surprise. Needless to say, we were able to eat less than half of the $60 dish.

Recommendation to anyone considering this restaurant is to seriously question portion size and to set boundaries with the person taking the order - they can simply not be trusted with providing a reasonable portion.

        We will likely not return.

        1. Why is the food cold?

          Jun 8, 2009
Went there for supper after watching AFC channel doing a story on tiong bahru's teochew porridge and wanted to have a light supper on a wonderful sat night. I was trying to find a 24 hour joint near my place and was glad I found a chinese joint instead of prata and more prata. The lor duck and the lor was cold, egg was cold, every dish was cold, only thing that was warm was the porridge. My wife had rice which was cold too. Very disappointed.

            • Nice Restaurant but food so so

              May 25, 2009
Been to this restaurant last evening since the reviews was good so far. The food only so so and not exactly fantastic. We had poached nai bai chai with mushrooms, fried diced salmon cubes, kway chap and chai poh omelette, can drinks for the kids and chinese tea and lime juice for the adults. We are a group of 4 adults and 3 children so I find it abit pricy but of cos this is a restaurant category so I guess the price is about that range.

Service quite ok but they can't wait to get your food and drinks order even before you can sit down.

Overall I find this place the setting, environment and ambience is alrite but the food is not anything superb.

              • Worth a Try...

                Apr 2, 2009
This is the 2nd time we patronize the restaurant. The portion and the value is pretty reasonable for a 24/7 restaurant in a housing estate area. Though the service of the waitress not really fantastic... Have to remind them quite a number of times when requesting for chilli padi and other service. But overall quite ok for housing esate standard.

We have ordered Eu Fu Noodle with Chives at S$12 for the 2nd time, the noodle resembles mee suah but dried one. Soft and they added the dried shredded scallop as garnish and this added quite a unique tast to the noodle. If you're a real Eu Fu Noodle lover, worth to give it a try... I am sure you'll love it.

Another of our favourite is their Omelette... the last time we have tried the bitter gourd Omelette... the taste is so so... however, this time round, we decided to have a change to try their Pickled Radish (chai poh) Omelette at S$6... hmmm... the taste was simply superb! It's not too saltish and they have added the cut spring onion to blend in and this combination really makes you drool and want more. Even, the customer from the next table asked the waitress what Omelette we were having... see... just the look of it can make you fall in love with it.

The fist time, we tried their Fish Maw Bai Chai Soup... nothing to shout. They have added the salted fish into the soup which I personally feel that it has covered the original taste of the soup... maybe it was because I do not know how to appreciate salted fish. Maybe for those of you who love salted fish may want to give it a try...

Their Claypot Spicy Dice Chicken, our first try too. It was fantastic too... It's at S$12 too. If you are having rice, I suggest you go for a bigger portion cos it really goes well with rice with their tingy spicy taste. They have added a special kind of leave (sorry didn't get to find out what's that) which was being fried till crunchy... very unique way of combination and cooking... Do give it a try if you are a chicken lover. I personally is one chicken lover and I simply find it delicious.

Their choices of drinks nothing to shout too.. We ordered their homemade barley (cold) at S$1.50 and pineapple juice at S$3, I have had pineapple juice for my 2 visits... Not too bad as it's freshly blended juice.

We had a quite sumptuous meal.

                Mar 2, 2009
Okay, so maybe it won't be a secret much longer. But nonetheless.

You know where I go the moment I want to satisfy my kway chap craving? At any time of the day or night?

                H.E.R.E.

They serve kway chap. It's one of the best value, most easily available kway chaps I can find around. You can get something for 2 people starting from $8.00 and up - depending on what you want and specify.

$10.80 gets you two bowls of piping hot kway, and a dish to share of pig intestines, stomach, duck meat, pork belly slices, tau kwa, tau kee and hard boiled egg. In that tasty dark sauce gravy. Deelish.

                Best part? It's available 24/7.

On the other hand, the fried rice is pretty yummy at $4, and if you want some soup for a cold night, try the fish soup with the tender fish slices.

                • Great obscure find

                  Aug 25, 2008
Happy to find a reasonably priced alternative to hawker fare near my fiancee’s home. Not sure what to make of “PRC service” comments in previous reviews, but we found the servers brisk/efficient yet relatively pleasant. Not five-star service, but above average for such an establishment. In fact, our server was very proactive in making recommendations, steering us away from mediocre dishes and double-checking our preference for taste.

                  1. First course of Chinese Spinach poached in soup stock (not on the menu) was tasty and warming on this cool evening, numerous baby scallops flavouring the stock nicely although making a tad salty.
                  2. Teochew mee swa with dried scallops – the noodles were braised with mushrooms, minced pork, xiao bai cai, and a healthy dose of dried scallops on top. Fantastic with some cut red chillies. A simple, home-cooked dish and great value for a $12 small portion (feeds 3).
                  3. The pork knuckle with citrus sauce was done nicely, but far too fatty for most Singaporeans’ taste. Tiny amount of lean meat makes this an impractical dish to order for us.

Overall a great find in an obscure location, with rustic food that reminded one of good PRC-based eateries (e.g. Pu Tien in Kitchener; Pudong Kitchen in Balmoral). Three disches cost $37, and was too much for the 2 of us.
