In Vivocity to go to the cinema, and in need of dinner. Our previous eating experience having been fairly forgettable, we had a bit of a more measured inspection of the options and decided to try this place.
Having lived in Bangkok for a number of years prior to being sent here, we are more harsh than most on the localised Thai food that gets served up in Singapore. I was impressed by the little lass' attempt at "Sawadee Kha" on entering, and that rather summed up the evening - a decent stab at it.
Chicken wings a nice appetiser, sweet chilli sauce probably from a bottle, and thus likely from Thailand, so that did OK.
We always use Green Curry Chicken as a barometer, and Thai Accent scored well here. Good chunks of chicken, a fair ratio of chicken to vege fillers, good consistency of sauce, coconut milk not over powering and agreeably spicy. I would have preferred a bit more kick, but I had a bowl of soya sauce and 'prik kee noo' so I could compensate. As a side note here, when I requested that they got it right first time - most places bring me nam plaa, despite me always stressing soya sauce, not fish sauce.
Beef with basil, a classic Thai dish, great sauce, lots and lots of garlic and fresh red chillis, my only gripe would be that the meat itself was slightly lower in quality than I would prefer.
Kailan with Garlic, or was it Garlic with Kailan? Either way, pretty good.
The menu has been somewhat localised, kangkong with shrimp paste and pineapple rice are not Thai at all, so we steered well clear of them.
The service was fine, ambience equally so, we had a view of the building site which was obviously fairly exciting and overall I'd say pretty decent.
At the end of the day, if you want proper Thai food, go to Bangkok. Most Singaporeans don't, so this is a fair approximation, catering for the majority.
And for all the tightwads whining on about $0.30 for tap water, you'll be no doubt happy to know it's now free. I am mildy astonished that someone sentient enough to use a computer can liken getting charged 30 cents for water to being raped, but I guess it's all relative.
Must tries: Green Curry Chicken
