Thai food remains one of my favourite cuisines, for its rich flavours of spicy, sour, sweet and salty, yet not being too overwhelming. The seemingly harmless tom yum soup that can send quivers down the spine, and Pad Thai which is the ideal example how 4 flavours can go together on a noodle dish and still taste perfect.

The hunt for Thai food is never ending. From the stalls at Beach road, to eateries contemporary twists found in mall, they just do not feel the same as those found in the land of smiles.

A friend recommended this little family-based eatery tucked away at the side of Coronation Plaza. It is inconspicuous and would most likely be missed. Look out for “Thai Noodle House” with rows of scrumptious looking Thai cuisines picture at the entrance.

    The Ambience
Interestingly, it was an instant memory trip back to Bangkok upon entering the shop. With yellow and green walls, Thai cravings and relics, pictures of the Thai King, and a framed red Premier League shirt bearing autographs, you can almost say there is neatness in this ‘mess’.

Opened by a Thai couple Madam Achara Siripong and her husband, you can be assured of a certain authenticity in its food selection.

    The Food
The recommendations include Tom Yum Noodle Soup ($7.00), Thai Green Curry Chicken Noodle ($7.00), Thai Belachan Chilli Fried Rice with Chicken and Egg ($8.50), Fried Beef and Basil Leaf Over Steamed Rice ($8.50).

I had a Thai Olive Rice ($8.50), Fried Sambal Kangkong ($7.50) and Thai Green Chicken Curry ($8.50). Although I am not a rice lover, the olive rice with its generous portions of Chinese black olive and minced pork has a right fluffy texture with light fragrance. It didn’t taste like the ‘normal’ Thai rice we were used to eating, and was right to the bite without the dryness.

The rice went with the fried kangkong, which was fried properly so that it wasn’t too soggy or crunchy.

The green curry had a decent amount of ingredients, wasn’t too spicy but could be a little too ‘lemak’ (coconut taste) for some. The Thai Ice Tea ($3.00) on the contrary was slightly diluted for my liking, but would please those who do not like it too sweet.  There is more good news – no GST or service charge.

For this no-frills family eatery, with its signature Thai friendly service, I would gladly pay for service though. Definitely a place for authenticity and good Thai memories.

Thai Noodle House is one of the better Thai restaurants around. It's run by Thais, so you know you're getting the real deal. Although some of the dishes are a little watered down for the local/Caucasian palate, most of the dishes are still fairly authentic. Sometimes, during a lull period, you can hear a little Thai music wafting through the kitchen. The restaurant is homely, like a dining room of a Thai friend's house, and prices here are similar to most cze char places.

    We ordered:

    1) Sweet Potato-Leaf with Thai Chili Paste ($8), which was delicious. Vegetables were blanched just right, and the chili was sweetish, and prawnish

    2) Stir-Fried Pork with Thai Chili Paste, Onion and Basil Leaf ($12), which was standard fare

    3) Tom Yum Soup with Prawns ($9.50). The soup was disappointingly watered down (I noticed a fair bit of Caucasians dining so the kitchen could have watered down their spice levels to suit the Caucasian palate), but the prawns were sweet, fresh and plentiful.

    4) Beef Noodle Soup ($7), with sliced beef, minus coriander and beansprouts. I love the rich beef broth, thin slices of tender beef and silky rice noodles.

    Must tries: Beef Noodle Soup

The one running the place definitely is Thai and therefore the dishes are pretty authentic. Tried the tom yum seafood, seafood pad thai, mango salad and red rubies dessert. All the dishes were true to the taste that one would experience if one eats in Bangkok. It's not high end cuisine style; in fact, presentation wise, quite home style, quite unpretentious & simple. But taste wise is probably one of the more authentic ones we can get for a reasonable price in aircon comfort.

The restaurant, like its food, is simply furnished with pictures of the Thai King & Queen on the wall. Also, I must add the parking in this locality can be quite challenging though.

I didn't get to see the bill so my amount spent is an estimate only.

Must tries: tom yum goong, pad thai, salad

I hear this is one of the places for "unadulterated Thai fare", and when you step in you would probably be convinced so, with the walls adorned with pictures and posters of Thai kings and other elements of Thai history. It's a pity that I didn't get to try the usual tom yum and green curry because everyone else was tucking into their soup-based noodles, so it just means that a second trip is on the cards in future :)

Crispy Fried Beancurd:The batter was very light, and so helped to retain the flavour and texture of the tofu inside. Tastes better with the spicy chilli dip served alongside it.

Phad Thai: The phad thai was alright but just a bit too much beansprouts for my liking. As you can see, they're quite generous with the seafood ingredients, which is always a good thing!

Beef Noodle Soup: I have to admit I didn't taste this, but everyone who had this said it was good because of the beef balls, beef slices and beef chunks... Good for those who love their beef.

Tanghoon Fishball Soup: Quite ordinary type of fishball soup.

I think I must return soon for the tom yum and green curry! And maybe the fried rice too? Haha, I'm hungry just thinking about it.

For pictures, head on here at my blog!

Worked late and decided to pop in for a quick dinner.

Ordered the tomyam soup and green curry chicken.

The tomyam this time round seemed " powdery". The last time i tried it wasnt like this.. did i remember wrongly? Thought their chef is thai? this soup isnt't very autentic then!

Green curry made up for the disappointing tom yam soup.

Must tries: Green curry, beef noodle soup

    need i say more?

the thai iced coffee and tea; a must try!

my sister had the seafood tom yam noodle soup and she simply loved it; the soup wasn't too spicy and the lack of the 'powdery' taste you gt when you buy tom yam soup outside is definitely a plus!

the olive rice my brother had was simply scrumptious! the rice was really fragrant, really different from the ones you get outside, where you hardly see any olives at all.

the beef soup comes with a generous serving of beef shin, beef balls and beef slices, really loved the soup and i bet it'd taste really nice with noodles!!

the green curry; you can choose between beef or chicken. i took the chicken, their meat was really tender! and the curry wasn't too spicy either!! a real delight i must say.

for desert we had the thai mango with sticky rice, sweet mango and best of all, the sticky rice was served warm! unlike the usual cold ones you get from outside. and i heard thay they only sell this dish when the mangoes are in season and sweet! try it now before they're out of season and you'd have to wait~

the red ruby consist of water chestnut coated with some jelly like substance and coconut milk, suitable for those sweet tooth people out there.

though the place's kinda small and not very well furnished, but the food's more important right? definitely going back there!!

Must tries: green curry, thai iced tea and iced coffee, tom yam soup, mango with sticky rice

again, I let my cravings take over the drive home. Stopping halfway with my bf at the thai noodle house to grab a simple thai meal.

We had the seafood phad thai, thai green curry, thai ice tea and a simple chinchow. Of all the fare, the thai green curry emerged victorious once again! With the aromatic flavor of spices and coconut milk wafting thru the delicate dish, it was a sure winner. Large chunks of chicken strewened all over had readily absorbed the flavors of the curry and were wonderfully tenderised. And of course, the addition of brinjal was excellent in the dish, providing a mushy and soft component to the otherwise rich dish.

The thai ice tea was authentic as well, similar to the ones I had in thailand.

Overall, a rather simple place with unadulterated thai foodfare. If you don't mind the rather uninteresting ambience and yearn for some authentic thai food at reasonable prices. Then this would be a safe bet!

Must tries: thai green curry, thai ice tea

Despite the small setup and poor air ventilation, the food is 100% authentic Thai and the service is warm and personal.

Must tries: Deep fried pomfret, cha-yen (Thai iced tea), mango with sticky rice, beef noodle soup, larb moo (minced pork salad)

For those who just want simple Thai family/ street fare at affordable prices, this little eatery will not disappoint. Nothing fancy but will satisfy for a simple and quick meal, when dining alone or in small groups of no more than 4. The place is small and tends to fill up fast so not too suitable for big group of diners, young children who need space to run or long lunches.

Must tries: Beef Soup, Tom Yam Soup, Crab Fried Rice
