Modest French restaurant

We went early evening to have a dinner as I heard this restaurant is always crowded.

It was a few minutes past 6 o'clock when we arrived. 2 groups were already there. It's alfresco and it looks like namely a "French stall" though 5 minutes walk from Mustafa center.

One negative point for me is its location. Too close to Serangoon road. I hate car fumes anytime anywhere, especially during a meal. So, we chose a table in the mid of the restaurant, not facing a roadside.

I ordered Executive Steak set ($25 ++)

My wife ordered an original dinner set ($16.9++).

Her choice among several menus were a soup of the day, chicken leg steak (forgot the exact name) as a main and Tiramisu.

Additionally we ordered a baguette ($1.5).

For drink, a bottle of sparkling mineral water ($8).

Our soup was served very quickly within 3 minutes. My onion soup was a little bit warm (not hot) and a bit salty too. These are minus points. But it was above average and basically OK. 2 slices of bread with melted cheese topping were floated in the soup. It was nice.

A soup of the day was zucchini soup but both of us could not tell what was inside. Taste was good.

A beef steak cooked in a medium rare, was juicy and primitive meat flavor was surely remained inside. Texture was chunky and baked potato as side dish was well cooked. Proper baking and proper salt. However, sauce was quite normal as we can have such taste in many other restaurants.

Chicken leg steak with grilled mashed potato was very nice. Chicken itself was grilled well and skin was crispy. Furthermore, its sauce was truly special. A little sour brown source was matched to chicken meat and it made an accent on the whole taste. I want to know the recipe.

Grilled mashed potato, a roasted flavor was hitting my nose and tongue. Having a chicken, mashed potato with special sauce is a golden triangle.

When we left the restaurant, it was almost packed with many people. I think the restaurant attract many people only by their good dishes with value prices. It was not a popular place such as River Valley, Orchard, Holland Village. No parking lot as well. So, they proved they have something special.

It is worth to have a dinner once if you want to have a French in a reasonable price. But please remember it is not actually an authentic French but it is nice whatever it is.

Must Tries: Chicken leg sauce

Not bad...

Went there yesterday for dinner with my friends. Food was not bad, but nothing I would rave about either.

Had the Chicken Leg with Mustard Crust set meal which was so-so, couldn't taste the mustard at all. The mushroom scented croquette that came with it was not bad. My cream of cauliflower soup was also so-so. The creme caramel dessert was really good though - I'd say almost on par with my all time favorite version at Ma Maison. Their serving was more generous than Ma Maison which was great (wish there'd been more caramel though), and at 16.80++ for a 3 course French meal, it was pretty good value.

Service was not bad. The French owner was amiable and our food came quickly.

I wasn't very excited about the food but I'll be back to try their Duck Leg with Foie Gras haha. Maybe I'm not used to traditional French cooking? Willing to give this place another chance.

Al Fresco dining is a good concept and helps keep costs down I guess. Quaint!

The French Stall@Serangoon

Go for the set meals, which includes a soup, main and desert.

Must tries: Executive Beef Steak Set, Desserts: Dark Chorcalate Cake, Giant Profiterole

The alfresco setting as well as the Deepavali lightings along Serangoon road makes a nice setting to have dinner over a glass of wine. Staff are friendly and helpful. The service seems to have improved since our pass visits.

Overall a good dining experience; nice french food at reasonable prices in an alfresco setting.

just desserts

not having read any of these reviews, a group of 3, my friends and I, set off for a french experience at this stall. Upon arriving, we were momentarily stunned by the number of people waiting to be seated but pleasantly surprised that at least they had comfortable chairs to sit on while waiting. We thought we would have to sit on these chairs too, but a lady staff (looks like the lady boss) approached us and asked if we mind sharing a table. Since the 3 of us are not couples, we agreed to share one. To our delight, there was no one else who wanted to share a table, hence we had the communal table to ourselves for the next half an hour.

We ordered desserts only, as we had yong tau foo for dinner just before that. The desserts menu was a little disappointing, as we expected a whole list of french desserts available. However, it's probably better to cook less items with quality, than to offer a whole range of distasteful items, which will definitely disappoint. Though the waitor who attended to us seemed a little impolite when he took our orders, maybe because we only ordered desserts.

We ordered choc souffle and honey cheesecake as we felt too full initially. No doubt, it took some time, but it was already stated in the menu that the souffle would take about 15 minutes before it's served. We didn't mind, since we were not in a rush and the setting just made it quite relaxing.

To our surprise, the cheesecake did not arrive before the souffle, in fact it was 5-10 minutes after we were a quarter in our souffle. My friend commented they probably forgot our order before that..

The choc souffle is warm and the choc filling was bitter, thick and creamy. It might not suit tastes which prefer the sweeter side, but definitely can fulfill people with the dark side..

The honey cheesecake, with all due respect to people who expected to taste honey, was a delightful experience. No doubt, i am no gourmet and definitely not an expert on cheesecakes. The humble cheesecake which arrived on our table seemed to be just any normal cheesecake but probably softer, which we thought would be too cheesy(sic). It turned out otherwise. The fragrance of the cheesecake with that lightness combined, made this cheesecake a winner for my friend. I expected the honey taste to surface before the cheesecake, masking the cheese taste, but it turned out otherwise.

We decided to order a giant profiterole when we saw the diners from the next table eating it with gusto. To the delight of my friend, it came soon after and it did not disappoint. The crust was a little sweet and crisp, combined with the vanilla ice cream, it was sweet heavens. The vanilla ice cream tastes creamier than usual ice cream and less sweet, though i have no idea where they bought it from, it did not seem to be homemade. The choc sauce poured over this made it heavenly as well. Though on a side note, it can be easily replicated with cream puffs and vanilla ice cream as well.

If only they have other french desserts, that would really make our night!

and if the service staff are trained to be more polite, that would be great. The boss came to chat with us, probably because we ate with gusto and kept exclaiming that the desserts were heavenly. =P
should have asked him more about how the desserts were done though

a comment from my friends: since it has ang mohs visiting it, there must be something about the restaurant which attracts them here. hopefully it's the food!
