My Princess Xena said she wanted to eat around Bukit Timah area. I was thinking of the food center or hor fun at Old Town White Coffee cafe.

Was surprised when she stopped at Old Brown Shoe. I am not exactly comfortable in pubs but this place is really casual and relaxing. An excellent choice to chill out after work over a glass of beer!

My Princess was quick to decide on fish and chips which came traditionally wrapped with newspaper. The battered fish was golden brown. It was crispy without being too greasy and the fish was fresh. Serving of fish was generous and the slab-cut chips were enough for two. Tartar sauce and malt vinegar were provided.

I finally settled on Chicken Pot Pie which was more like thick chicken soup covered with flaky pie crust. There were chunks of chicken, potatoes, peas and carrots in the soup.

It was comfort food after a long day at work ;)

    Must tries: Fish and chips

I was organising an "after work" drinking session for my office staff and chanced upon Old Brown Shoe from the website. I was hoping to find something from the West as my office is located in the West too, and thought this place seemed decent from the reviews given.

It didn't disappoint me. The finger food was good: we had practically most of the finger food on the menu as there were many of us. I would recommend their chicken wings - which were very good: there was a tinge of garlic flavour, nicely marinated & fried, not too oily and the meat is tender. As mentioned by other reviewers, the fish & chips were indeed good too! The samosas are good too with a nice curry fragrance (not too spicy). The cider beer went well with all the finger food and is a favourite with the ladies. We also had two bottles of red wine.

We were there on a Friday and the pub was rather packed. All tables were taken by then. There were very few locals. Live band started at 8.30pm and the place got abit noisier after that but we didn't have to shout at the top of our voices still.

Service is generally well - no complaints.

Almost all of the people at my table commented that this is a pub which they will definitely come back with their friends.

Must tries: Chicken wings, Fish & Chips

A most delightful fish and chips, the fish is lightly crisp and the white meat is tender and sweet, while not overwhelmingly oily. Very NICE indeed, i think its the best fish and chips I ever had to date in Singapore.

Came here after class at about 10.15pm to this dark and cozy pub. The ambience was very relaxing and the few customers were chatting over beer, watching soccer and one was even reading a novel in a quiet corner over dim lights. The server was chirpy and friendly.

As recommended by contrarian, i ordered a fish and chips ($12.50 but $10.00 on fridays). After about 10 to 15min, a guy came out holding some "rubbish" wrap in some old classified section of the local newspaper. For a minute I did not realise that the "rubbish" was my fish and chippies!

Upon unwrapping the paper, a most delightful sight appeared, nice fried chips and golden brown fish!!!!wheeeeee....yummy...and the taste was just as good too. I only wish that the chips were from fresh potatoes but i think it was from frozen chips. Well it was nicely fried even though its frozen food. I sooooo LOVE the creamy texture of the fish and the lightly battered crispy crust.

I really like that they used butter paper and newspaper to wrap my fish and chips. Its been awhile since I left Australia and i can't remember the last time I had it wrap in newspaper (even in aust, they hardly use newspaper, mostly butcher's paper).

Recycling paper is green, and we should all try not to waste resources and be innovative just like Old Brown Shoe. There's no washing, and paper is recycled. This is a classic example of "less is more". ermmm.... I just hope that NO person read that paper in the LOO while doing Number 1 and Number 2!!!! eewwwwww.... paper infusing the odour!!!! yucks!!!! hahaha...

YES! I will be BACK!!!! ermmm...just being a green freak, Old brown shoe can have a recycling bin for customers to throw their DRY paper into the the bin aft their meal, for recycling at the plant???? hahahahaha....OH! do take note that they only open at 4pm, check out the operating hours above.

Aft such a great meal I need to take a leisurely walk down to crown centre for cakes at whisk bakery...errmmmm...better make that a fast brisk walk filled with greed, excitement and anticipation!!!!

(I did not not use flash on the camera as I did not wana disturb the ambience)

    Must tries: fish and chips

The Old Brown Shoe takes you back to the good old English pub with its decor, ambience and English pub food. To add to the authenticity, a whole lot of Caucasian clients too.

The popular dish here is fish and chips, served in a newspaper - you don't get much more traditional English than that! The fish is quite a substantial portion, and is quite competently done (but not a match for my gold standard, Wild Olives at Terminal 2). The chips are pretty decent too. For $12.50, good value; special discounted price of $10 on Fridays.

I also had the bangers with chips in place of mash. 3 English sausages and chips, $12.50, decent.

They have Heineken, Kilkenny, Guiness and Strongbow cider on tap, plus a large selection of English ales (like Abbot), ciders (like Bulmers) and other exotic beers. There is also a choice of several wines - a sign of the times I guess, now that wine is increasing in popularity so that it even invades this venerable pub! The Strongbow cider is the sourish type. Good for me, but less so for those who like their cider sweet. $6.50 for half a pint, $12 for a pint.

If you sit inside, there is a smell of fried food lingering, and your clothes will likely smell of it too - probably the only downside to the ambience.

All prices are nett, and service is very good and friendly from both the man and the 2 ladies. A great way for a taste and feel of England on a budget!

Wednesday is quiz night from about 8.30 to 11. I'm looking for team mates who are good at general knowledge and trivia, especially those who are very good at knowledge of entertainment, music, literature, the arts and sports. Participation fee is $5 each person, and the winning team takes all. Could interested parties please send me a message, thanks.

Must tries: fish and chips, steak and guiness pie

    1. ice For you to say gold standard the F&C at Wild Olives must be really excellent. But what is your criteria for a "good" F&C? What makes Wild Olives stand out among others you've tried? My best F&C are eaten at Irish pubs.
    2. LiquidShaDow U know, I went down last Saturday and it was closed. It's only now that I've realised the opening hours for the the place. I'll probably try to head down again another time.
