The Old Brown Shoe takes you back to the good old English pub with its decor, ambience and English pub food. To add to the authenticity, a whole lot of Caucasian clients too.
The popular dish here is fish and chips, served in a newspaper - you don't get much more traditional English than that! The fish is quite a substantial portion, and is quite competently done (but not a match for my gold standard, Wild Olives at Terminal 2). The chips are pretty decent too. For $12.50, good value; special discounted price of $10 on Fridays.
I also had the bangers with chips in place of mash. 3 English sausages and chips, $12.50, decent.
They have Heineken, Kilkenny, Guiness and Strongbow cider on tap, plus a large selection of English ales (like Abbot), ciders (like Bulmers) and other exotic beers. There is also a choice of several wines - a sign of the times I guess, now that wine is increasing in popularity so that it even invades this venerable pub! The Strongbow cider is the sourish type. Good for me, but less so for those who like their cider sweet. $6.50 for half a pint, $12 for a pint.
If you sit inside, there is a smell of fried food lingering, and your clothes will likely smell of it too - probably the only downside to the ambience.
All prices are nett, and service is very good and friendly from both the man and the 2 ladies. A great way for a taste and feel of England on a budget!
Wednesday is quiz night from about 8.30 to 11. I'm looking for team mates who are good at general knowledge and trivia, especially those who are very good at knowledge of entertainment, music, literature, the arts and sports. Participation fee is $5 each person, and the winning team takes all. Could interested parties please send me a message, thanks.
Must tries: fish and chips, steak and guiness pie
