  1. Oh How I Nearly Died for Tea.

    Jun 28, 2008
A group of us went to TWR for some post dinner drinks after satisfying our taste buds at the relish. What ensued was somewhat atrocious and certainly quite unforgettable and possibly marking a new high or rather low on the service standard in most F&B outlets in Singapore. (depending how you see it, really).

Upon parking, we found out that there's a compulsory valet service at a hefty price of $5. Nevermind that we could very well park the car on our own, why thank you. But I digress, what's $5 compared to spending time with friends, 2 of which were celebrating their birthday.

Excitedly, after sorting out the parking matters, we walked into the beautifully renovated church what with dimmed lights and intricate stained glasses. It is indeed beautiful, right down to the typeface used on the menu.

So far, so good huh, until, we tried to get the attention of the wait staff, except for the very fact that, none came by even tho' we were waving our hands quite abit. Perhaps they were shorthanded yes, perhaps there were just too many customers, yes. PERHAPS, they just weren't attentive, yes. Too many perhaps. Finally the time came for us to order some drinks, and ordered, we did.

A few of us decided to stick to tea for our choice in beverage, and time surely did pass fast, 30 minutes or so, was tea served? Surely it was, (30 minutes later of course!) in a very nice plain white tea cup on a saucer.

$6.50 for a cup of tea.

    In case you missed it.

$6.50 for a cup of lukewarm tea, and yes sir, no tea-bag, yes madam, no tea-bag indeed.

A few of us started discussing about the very steep price of the tea and decided that perhaps this is a very high class place which explains the price. So, very slowly we sipped.

Oh how we sipped. And it was gone.

And in came a hunk, we looked, oh it's our friend and we waved and he sat down and ordered himself a tea too. Tea came, but tea came this time in a nice plain white tea cup on a matching saucer with A POT.

What's happening? Did tea decide to be generous and serve itself in a pot? Or?

    The plot thickened.

So it was another round of hands waving and when we did finally get someone to come by for us to inquire about this very strange tea situation, it was almost time to go home. But, being the inquisitive beings we are, we asked nonetheless only to find out, any order of tea will definitely come with a pot. And the reason why we didn't get the pot of tea, and were served a cup of tea instead was, "sorry madam, we ran out of tea pots."

Which translated to, we were short-changed and nobody even bothered to tell us until we saw, we asked and we conquered.

If you are still reading about my little tea problem by now, could you please say W00T?

Nonetheless, the wait staff mumbled a few words which I believed was sorry and that we would have our pots of tea soon, turned out to be suffering from time elasticity disease. Because "soon" translated to another 15 minutes wait and boy was that tedious or what for some tea.

So yes, we had our pots of tea, oh diluted sort of tea.

And the night soon ended because the music was schizo and we had enough of disappointment disguised as tea.

Will I come back for more tea? Teeheehee, I don't tea so.
    Must Tries

to order some tea to see if you are served a single cup of tea or with a pot

    • The Dempsey curse strikes again - fabulous location, wonderful ambience but mediocre and expensive food

      Jun 29, 2008
A friend and I were thinking of a nice place for dinner on Friday and she mentioned she had heard that a new restaurant called The White Rabbit was opening up.

I immediately checked HGW, but alas, there was no review yet at that point. Google however pointed me to chubbyhubby. When I saw the pictures at the website, I was completely stunned. The pics were gorgeous!

So, we made a reseveration for dinner. I was actually a little apprehensive because:
      1. Dempsey is a cursed place - where restaurants more often than not rely on their wonderful unique location to sell themselves, and think it justifiable to serve average food at exorbitant prices. Growl.

      2. The place just opened - would we be subjecting ourselves to painful service and half-baked food?

      So.

Ambience - the pictures on chubbyhubby lived up to their expectations! The place was wonderfully done up. I liked the way the lights played on structures in the restaurant and against the grills to throw shadows against the walls and ceiling.

A big negative though was the noise level. We sat in the side alcove and was spared most of it but I was quite hoarse by the time I left. But my goodness, when I went into the proper hall for the toilet, the noise level almost bowled over. It must be the high ceilings and lack of soft furnishing - I don't know how anyone can have a proper conversation in the main hall!

Service - Pretty good. Not at all like it was their first week. Bread came promptly, food came in a timely flow, the waitress was friendly and offered suggestions.

Food - What did I say about the Dempsey curse? Yep. There was no escape. It was mediocre, mediocre, mediocre.

We shared the prawn bisque soup (that was average). I had the duck with orange sauce. That was again average and a little dry. My friend's sole was certaintly below average, bogged down by a fish that was not too fresh. The thing about fish is, you don't have to be an expert to know when it is not fresh. Your body knows, your taste buds know. There's this certain flatness and mushy taste to old fish. We shared the mac and cheese side and the strawberry dessert....again average and forgetable. I am not being very descriptive here, but what's there to say about average? Nothing teased our taste buds, nothing made me put down my utensiles and have a moment. It was all just blaaaaah.

I thought about the food and wondered whether I could attribute it to the restaurant being new. But you know, bad service, forgotten orders and mixed up dishes can be attributed to start-up hiccups....but food that is not delicious? If a cook is mediocre, he is mediocre.

At the prices they were charging ($$30+++ for a main), it just ain't worth it.

      • Go if you do not mind mediocre food served lukewarm and service with a snarl

        Mar 18, 2009
The place was half empty when we were there for lunch. We were a party of 4 and all of us chose from their 3 course set lunch of a starter, a main and dessert.

For starters we all had : slow cooked egg with shallot and wine sauce.

The main dishes : 2 orders of braised lamb shank with couscous; 1 ribeye steak with fries and 1 baby back ribs in bbq sauce.

All the dishes were lukewarm when they arrived at our table. When we commented on it to the wait staff, all the response we got was : " oh, we'll feed back to our kitchen..." They were not even mildly apologetic! None of the dishes were worth shouting about. They were okay, but you can get this kind of standard in other restaurants.

The desserts: 2 orders for their black forest cake which the wait staff said was their signature dessert; 1 sticky toffee pudding and one warm peanut butter chocolate tart.

We had ordered tea and coffee (which was not part of the set menu)but the desserts took so long to arrive, we thought that they's forgotten about our orders. When they finally arrived, I took one look at my dessert ( the black forest cake) and lost any desire to eat it. Yes, they did state quite clearly in the menu that it's "not the way you remember it" - they had totally de-constructed it, which was fine... but really... the presentation ... Let me put it this way, if you have brown coloured food with a mousse-like texture and it's shaped like sausages, and served on a bed of crushed oreo cookies... It doesn't look very appetising. I did try a little bit of it, though. It was nothing to shout about.

What we were totally unprepared for was the male wait staff ( we shall refer to him as J---- ,since we are not allowed to identify him name) who came up to us while we were mid-way thru dessert and told us : "we close at 3pm" We were dumbstruck for a while. What? Sorry, what's that supposed to mean? And J---- repeated : "we close at 3pm"

We were still mid-way thru our dessert and the only reason we were still there at 2:30pm was because dessert took half a lifetime to arrive! While the rest of our party continued with our dessert, we could see J---- checking his watch every 5 mins or so!

We were so appalled by this kind of attitude that when J---- brought our bill, we asked him if that's how he was trained - to tell customers bluntly, we close at 3pm? He replied, yes, with a smirk!
Well, I have only this to say: I will make return visits to an establishment even if the food is mediocre but the service is good, but I refuse to patronise a place no matter how good the food is, if the wait staff has attitude problems!

Maybe The White Rabbit should consider being a theme restaurant. The theme being : LUKEWARM FOOD AND SERVICE WITH A SNARL.

        1. Just Great... Exactly what we Wanted

          Feb 15, 2010
WOW.. we had CNY / valentines day dinner at White rabbit.. thinking it was a good opportunity to try this restaurant, as we had not been able to get a table on a couple occasions.

After being warmly welcomed.. and seated, we were taken through the menu... and its a good international style menu... and not a bad wine list.. although some of the prices are marked up a bit... especially if you know what the cost prices are..

We ordered... and awaited the experience

          Entrees
          Tuna carpaccio
Scallops and pork belly - - Just YUM..

          Main
Duck Confit - Melted in mouth..
Tenderloin and frogais and truffe - This dish was exceptional.. with great flavors but very rich... But having had this same dish in a number of restaurant in different countries, i must admit the chefs did a great job..

The wine lists is quite good selection - we ended up with a bottle of cloudy by.. at $120++ for the bottle.

Overall its a great experience, exception service from all the staff.. the setting is quite nice, in a old church, but also quite noisy at times...

Really worth the try if you like Western / International food..

            Feb 7, 2010
The White Rabbit  - fancy name; fancy setting. I really expected a nice dining experience with some good gourmet fare to go along. Of course, I expected attentive service.. for those kinds of prices, I sure do. I was not disappointed on just one count - the setting. An old chapel with high ceiling and some nice lighting. This is a spectacular setting. However, the place is very noisy with the echos from everyone talking. So it is hard to have a conversation on the table. Nevertheless, everything good about this restaurant ends with this sentence.
We had a booking for 4 and the first goof up was that they did not have our reservation on file. Oh well.. can happen. So we were asked to wait at the bar, no apologies, no explanations. Just a "Go there and wait". It took about 30 min to get us seated down. Once we were seated, it took them forever to get some bread. We were hungry and wanted to have a quick bite. It took some herculean effort and lots of vigorous waving to get the attention of the waiting staff. Perhaps they were busy, it being a Friday evening. But you come to expect good service from restaurants of this class. The bread tasted nice. I ordered, the Vegetarian Pasta. It was seriously ordinary. I surely can make better Pasta myself. The portion was quite small as well. The profiterole was not bad, although it was the hardest profiterole I have even had... it too a lot of effort to cut through it.
The billing process took ages. Even after we had asked for the check, they took about 30 min to bring it to us. At these kinds of prices, the service left much to be desired and the food was not great shakes either. I would definitely not get back here. The only thing that might take me back there is the setting. But the service sucks so much that I really would hesitate.

              Jan 21, 2010

So we decided in 2010 we would try some new restaurants instead of revisiting our favourites.  To start the year off we visited the White Rabbit with work colleagues/friends and what a good start to year it was.

7 of us in all, we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals, the service was excellent but not overbearing.

We had a variety of meals between us and not one was disappointing.

The only small fault with this place is that earlier on when it wasnt full it was quite echoey as it has very high ceilings, big windows, no carpets or curtains.  But that is nothing to spoil the evening at all.

                Sep 7, 2009
A group of 3 of us in a dinner setting on a Saturday night.
Reached early at about 6.45pm and the place was quite empty, though the crowd started to fill the place approaching 8pm.

For starters, we shared the Warm Spinach Salad, Pan Fried Foie Gras, Roasted Tomato Soup and the Beef & Barley Broth. As always, a Foie Gras dish rarely disappoints and together with the Spinach Salad, I felt that both these 2 dishes were the best of the evening. The Foie Gras was well-complemented with a layer of corn blinis and the spinach appetizer was enhanced brilliantly with the Vinaigrette dressing.
Soups tasted decent, though I was intrigued by the way they served the Beef Broth - A plate with 4 small beef pieces, before the waiter poured the soup from a pot over it.

For mains, we had the Black Cod, the Roasted Tenderloin and the Lobster Thermidor. All 3 were pretty tasty dishes of high quality standards.

Worth a visit back, but only if I can afford it again....

                  Aug 2, 2009
I have been to the Rabbit 2 times so far and the verdict is that it is a restaurant that I will revisit again.

The service and food during both visits were good. I tried the oysters which were fresh, the wild mushroom risotto was tasty and the wagyu cote de boeuf is very good.

It can get a bit noisy but as both times we were in groups of 4 or 5 people I guess we were contributing to the noise so no complaint about this.

Overall I find White Rabbit a good place to entertain guests as the food, wine list and bar just outside the dining area provide for a very nice ambience.

I look forward to visiting soon for brunch/lunch.

                  • Overpriced, Over-hyped!!

                    Aug 1, 2009
From the outside the restaurant looks ike a perfect place to enjoy an evening of great food, in comfortable surroundings. If that’s what you are expecting … just move on!!

Dinner for three cost us about $250 – that’s the highest I have paid for the most forgettable food. Frankly none of us had anything good to say about the 3-course meal.

I chose the daily special – big mistake! Even after we asked him to repeat, none of us understood what the waiter had described. Anyway I went ahead and ordered it and the three of us took bets on whether the dish was fish or meat!! I was served all fancy – but it was just slab of pork which tasted like ..er like cooked pork!!

I am not going back there – that’s it!

Oh! Avoid those chairs with the circular hand-rests at all costs. They are the most uncomfortable chairs ever. After an hour-and-half I came off with sprained nerve that hurt like carpal tunnel syndrome.

Sorry to pick you on you but - you order the daily special, even though you don't know what you've chosen and then complain about it? Come on, maybe if you actually selected a dish that sounded appetising your experience could have been a bit more positive. Also, would have been a helpful review if you actually commented on the other dishes giving a reason for them not being up to your standards.
                    • A perfectly lovely evening

                      Jul 26, 2009
Having read the previous reviews I was expecting the cool ambiance of being in this lovingly-converted church, but for the food to just be so-so..... wrong, wrong, wrong. the bit about the setting being desperately cool and chilled is true, but the food was top notch too, and carried off with aplomb and flair.

I had the curried black cod with potatoes, green and other small tidbits. the portion was not huge, but more importantly, it all tasted lovely. the lady had the rib eye which was more substantial, cooked well and tasted really meaty and earthy. lovely. we shared the st marnier souffle, which was surprisingly light and fluffy, very tasty and light on the tummy, which makes a pleasant change from most puds.

setting in the booth with candles flittering was lovely and private. service excellent, lovely smiles, attentative and very accommodating of all our requests (we asked to move tables, which was done effortlessly). drinks all good, and overall a lovely evening.

                      Well done White Rabbit.

                      • Hop into Whimsical Land!

                        Jul 26, 2009
My excitement level shot up a few notches when Bistro Du Vin by Les Amis opened at Shaw Centre. Sadly, it was fully booked for Saturday night. Undaunted and determined to find a place to gorge for the weekend, I was surfing hungrygowhere.com for alternatives when White Rabbit hopped into my mind. It wasn’t a new food establishment and I’ve read numerous food reviews about this place. Somehow, it was overshadowed by the more popular PS Cafe within the Dempsey cluster of F&B outlets. Today is my lucky day as I managed to snag a table for 2 at 830pm.

The White Rabbit, a restaurant and bar housed in a beautifully restored chapel located in the increasingly crowded Dempsey area serves modern European cuisine. The kitchen is helmed by Daniel Sia who was most recently working with Chef Justin Quek at Le Platane in Shanghai. Prior to that, he has also run the kitchens of the Harvey Nichols restaurant in Hong Kong and Marmalade in Singapore. Chef Sia also trained briefly under English celebrity chef Marco-Pierre White. My confidence level rises with such strong credentials and I was pretty optimistic about my dining experience.

With 11 different starters, we were spoilt for choice. What’s delightful about the menu is the chef gave some traditional classic a new spin, by injecting his own interpretation without the pretentiousness. We settled on the Escargot ravioli served with breaded frog’s legs, parsley coulis and a light fennel emulsion.

The mains though wasn’t extensive, covers a variety of meat and seafood. I was attracted by the Curried Black Cod as most restaurants serve the miso paste version which was done-to-death. The cod fish is roasted with spices and served with potato and green apple galette, a mild Japanese curry emulsion and wild rice puffs. The only downside to this dish is the wild rice puffs which look like dried maggots up close. David Crispy Duck Leg Confit with pan fried potato and red cabbage fared much better. The tender duck leg glides off the bone and goes really well with the slightly crisp potato.

I was dying to finish dinner so that I can move on to the desserts. We were pretty much set on the White Rabbit Black Forest Cake. I was expecting a typical slice of cake and was pleasantly surprised when it came served with chocolate mousse, chocolate sponge, kirsch jelly brandied cherries and a scoop of ice cream. The combination taste is exquisite and totally changed my opinion about the usual boring black forest cake layered with thick cream. We were torn between the crème brulee and Soufflé Rothschild, and finally decided on the latter. By far it was the best soufflé I have eaten. The Grand Marnier soufflé served with poached apricot is so light and airy I could feel myself floating to heaven. What a perfect sweet ending to an equally perfect meal.

Did I forget to mention the service is excellent? Prompt, efficient and friendly - the basics that every restaurants should learn from.

Budget about $85 per pax with wine.

Opened by Wee Teng Wen (UOB CEO's son) with a college friend, this restaurant is really pretty being housed in a restored old chapel with all the stained windows.
The place was quite hard to find and when my gf called up for directions, one of the wait staff actually gave her the wrong directions and we ended up half an hour late for our reservation.

The White Rabbit is a restaurant & bar serving classic European comfort food but one of its signature dish "Mac & Cheese" is hardly European and far more expensive than any Macaroni and cheese I had before.
The food was unremarkable and this place is more for people watching or to be seen in than anything else.
My gf loved the place (it's really pretty and she is shallow) since it's in one of the now hip areas in Singapore (told you she's shallow) but I have mixed feelings about it (because I am deep, sincere and intelligent).

It's a great place to impress a first date or for a romantic tete-a-tete with a special someone (when the ambience and not food is all that matters) but if you are looking for good and unpretentious food, give this place a miss.

                            Jun 22, 2009
Before i went to The white rabbit, I heard that it was a beautiful & hip restaurant with so-so food. Last sat, I was there with my family for brunch (for the first time) and I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

Firstly, it was a beautiful & quaint restaurant. I love the design and the quirkiness of it all.

Next, not only is this a pretty place, the service was excellent. We were showed to our table immediately by a very hospitable host and had great attention from the ever so vigilant service staff (even those not serving our table). every slight raise of the head and we have a waiter coming our way. which was really good as we had 2 toddlers with us. The waitress who was serving us was very patient with us as it was our first time there and wanted to order food that will suit both the adults and the kids. She had the initiative to recommend the kids having small portion of fresh juices (without ice). it came in a kid sized plastic cup which is always good for kids that age to handle.

We ordered a couple of dishes to share and i must say, i'm impressed by the unique rendition of their offerings.
The hotcakes were light and fluffy, and of course very pretty to look at. The Wild mushroom pasta was beautifully done, al dente of course. The omelette with salmon was light, fluffy, and a great melt in your mouth treat. and my ultimate decadent fav was the nuttella french toast. if you have a sweet tooth, it is a must try!

all in all, it was a wonderful experience and a place that i would recommend to my friends for brunch. tho' tucked away from the busy Dempsey area, i'm appreciative for the accessible parking which is just next to the restaurant. The restaurant was busy without being over crowded. the staff were attentive without being obtrusive.
I'm a fan! I hope to return for dinner and hope they have good selection of wines, since they have a wine cellar.
