Can do better with a $90 bill

I really should have read the reviews here before going. Shallow me chose this place because I have a weakness for floor-to-ceiling glass panes, warm glows beckoning from within, and a name like Tin Hill that makes it sound so Australian rustic.

Food goes like this :
1) Carrot soup - ok passable at $6.

2) Crabcakes - my favourite for the nite. Two large crunchy cakes chockful of crab meat, with wasabi mayo to lift the taste buds - $16.

3) Miso cod aglio olio pasta with bonito flakes - separately, the cod and the pasta work, but together, it just looks like some forced marriage.

4) Lambshank - biggest letdown at $30, was absolutely bland. I wanted to ask for some Vegemite to give it a hearty boost. The meat was tender enough to be stripped from the bone, but it just sank into the mound of mashed potatoes, surrounded by a puddle of polite gravy.

5) Pavlova - unless you like meringue sweetened with lots of icing and baked until it's plaster of paris crunchiness, hacking away at the diabetes-inducing dessert does not make for a refined finish to a meal.

Total bill was $90+ for two - so we sat around longer to eat the ambience and the friendly service.

Must Tries: Crabcakes

Reasonably good food

Reasonably good western food. Not very distinctive menu though.
Better than Conroy & Finch.

Got crayons and kids menu.

turbo-charged take on regular breakfast

as i spin around Singapore trying to find good breakfasts ... it strikes me with surprise that so many are so hopeless .. because it ain't difficult! the brunch options at Tin Hill @ Bukit Timah stand out for me because they take basic eggs and the typical add-ons and deliver a turbo-charged taste that sets it a mile apart from others -- the sort of taste that doesn't need salt, pepper, ketchup etc -- especially if you have been exercising in the morning, the last thing you want to do is throw away the good work with the fatty stuff -- try scrambled eggs with mushrooms, onion, bacon ... good stuff. goes down nicely with a newspaper and stiff Illy brew.

A Dessert Review

My guy and I were on our way to Yanqing’s Shanghai Kitchen (which was surprisingly deserted for a Friday night – I wonder what’s happened there, the standard of food doesn’t seem to have dropped as far as I can tell), when we stumbled upon Tin Hill. Our minds were already set on some hearty shanghainese so we decided to come back just for dessert. Tin Hill has a kind of Project Shop meets Marmalade Pantry vibe, which is very pleasant. Decor-wise, it’s very reminiscent of the abomination that was Corduroy and Finch (now that place was absolute garbage – I marvel at how it lasted for so long) .We had no problems with service either, but we were only there for a short time.

We ordered the sticky date pudding and Smore’s Amore in the restaurant, and had a vanilla and a nutella cupcake to go. I was a little underwhelmed by the sticky date pudding, it wasn’t dense or sticky enough for my liking. Marmalade Pantry’s version still reigns supreme I think. The vanilla ice cream accompanying the pudding came topped with sugared slivers of orange peel, which was a nice little stylish touch admittedly, but not enough to win me over. The Smores dessert was something else though. Anyone who digs Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food or Marsha Marsha Mallow ..or toasted marshmallow anything really, will love this dessert. It’s basically a generous portion of toasted marshmallows sandwiched between a pair of giant nutty oat cookies. The whole thing sits on a layer of chocolate sauce with yet more sauce drizzled over the top of it. The crispy toasted bits of the marshmallow were especially yum.

The cupcakes were pretty good too. The vanilla cupcake is very much in the Magnolia Bakery style – super sweet thick frosting with a strong vanilla flavour- the kind that hurts your teeth just looking at it. My sweet tooth is just ridiculous so while I loved the frosting, I imagine most people would find it a bit too sweet. My only complaint was that the actual cake was a little powdery, even when left out to thaw for a period of time. If it were a little more moist, it would be perfect. That said, the frosting was so tremendous that the cake’s texture didn’t trouble me overly. The nutella cupcake was real nice too. The cake tasted more dense and home made than Marmalade Pantry’s; and you can’t really go wrong with nutella as a topping can you?

All in all, not a bad first experience. It’s in my neighbourhood and within easy reach – I’ll surely be popping back to try out the real food

btw, the bill is an approximation as I didn't settle it.

good stuff for the health-conscious, hard workers

If you are working long hours in the office, are short on time and trying to look after yourself healthwise, then Tin Hill is a great option. After 12 hours in the office and then some exercise, the last thing I want is food that's heavy on oil and fat. I find that Singapore does not have a lot of affordable, healthy food options. However, Tin Hill gives you a range of good, affordable salads, meat and veg, or pasta, which is both tasty and good for you. Go the grilled vegetable stack plus a main - it hits the mark. It's good, guilt-free fare for folks training for the stanchart marathon! The wines are also reasonably priced and offer the ideal/affordable stress relief at the end of a long day - sit outside and peoplewatch or stay inside for some tunes and chatter.

Must Tries: grilled veg, all main courses, house red wine
