    "So tired of bad food"
  1. Pig with wine --- good

    Dec 17, 2008
Had a wine dinner at a friend's place a couple weeks ago and we were all bringing food. Had to crack my head for awhile before I remembered the roast pig place at Tiong Bahru. Now I can't think of much else that goes better with wine than Roast Pig!

I can't say that the roast pig here is THE best but I don't really know where else to go. They have a lot of accolades from Channel U, Makansutra etc so can't be that bad. And it was pretty good.

I made the mistake of not calling ahead and had to wait 30 mins for my roast pig. It would have been longer but I was lucky that they had already prepped a pig for roasting. So boys and girls, if you're going to order from them, please call ahead. They also do delivery which is only $5 bucks more.

The uncle at the store was hilarious doing a song and dance routine for me in his multi-story clogs. Check out the pictures.

Whole pig cost $128 and can feed about 8 yao guis.

I hear the roast duck here is pretty good too. Will try next time.

Update 06 March 09: Roast pig is now $138.

For outstanding roast pig, I'd suggest Fernando's at Macau's Hac Sa Beach.

Fernando's! Yes everyone say that you have to go there when you go to Macau. I almost went there but the 40 min drive there was too far for my hungry belly to take...

I decided to try Tiong Bahru Roasted Pig Specialist after reading that they roast their own pigs. These days, most of the roasted meat stalls buy it from factories, so it is pleasant to see that this stall does it on its own.

The verdict? It is slightly saltier but otherwise it is quite similar to those that are produced in the factories. One advantage this stall has is that you can buy slices of roasted pig skin in the individual portion instead of buying the whole pig.

The stall owners are nice people and service comes with a smile. They are also flexible, and you can add more meat to your dish for just 50 cents more - very reasonable.
