Tiong Shian Porridge needs no introduction among foodies. Readers of FoodieFC would have known that I am a great fan of this place. Despite living in the North, I still find myself (with her) making a special trip down here. (I am a foodie!!) For the benefit of doubt, Tiong Shian Porridge specialises in serving porridge and claypot frog leg! Yet again, during this visit, the place is packed!

The lady who determines if you get 1 piece more or less meat.

Look at the number of plates of Raw Fish in the freezer!

Here's how to order: Find a empty table (or share a table). Make your order at the cashier and inform them of your table number. Lastly, pay and wait for it to be delivered to you. We waited for around 20 minutes this time before getting our food. Lucky us! During our last visit, we waited for half-an-hour.

Tiong Shian Porridge is also know for its Raw Fish. You can observe this for yourself when you are there. Almost every one orders this! The Raw Fish consist of slices of raw fish, chilli, ginger, lettuce, spring onions and shallots. All you need to do is to squeeze the lime juice and mix the ingredients up! The fish is fresh with no fishy taste. This is a must order! For just $3.90 you get so many pieces of raw fish and it taste so yummy.

We observed that most people ordered the Braised Bean Curd (Lou Bean Curd). Hence, we decided to order one too. The Braised Bean Curd was unique. It was very soft, and silky smooth on the inside. The sauce on top complement the dish well especially when paired with plain porridge. Add in the chilli at the side to give it a spice it up.

The Shredded Chicken Porridge was on the salty end. However, I must mention that the shredded chicken was well marinated and cooked. Very flavourful and soft chicken meat!

Ordered Dried Chilli Frog Leg again. Right amount of sweetness and spiciness. The frog (meat) was tender and flavourful having adsorbed the sauce. Delicious!

As usual, I ordered a bowl of Plain Porridge for myself. The reason for ordering this is to add the sauce from Dried Chilli Frog Leg and the frog leg into this! It will transform into the best plain porridge ever.

Again, Tiong Shian Porridge is one of my favourite food destination especially for porridge or claypot frog leg.  The down side is that you have to be prepared to sweat it out eating this as this place is not air-conditioned. (this is something worth sweating for). Should you have difficulty finding seats, there's level 2!

I was around the Outram Park area and decided to have a simple dinner. Seeing that this outlet looked really popular, I decided to step in and have some porridge.

A coffee shop setting, beware of sitting too close to the kitchen as it can get pretty hot.

I went with the century egg porridge ($3.80). As each porridge is done individually, be prepared to wait a little for the dish to arrive. Nonetheless, for a coffee shop, they have an efficient system that takes orders and ensures that the right dish is served to your table - pretty good service standards for a coffee shop. Back to the porridge, one can tell that it has been cooked for awhile as the rice and the water converges into a thick broth. They were also generous with the century egg, which added a nice flavour to the food. Expect to be a little thirsty afterwards though as a high level of salt/msg was used.

To tag along the porridge, I ordered the raw fish ($5.80), which was a generous portion of white fish to go along and paired well with the porridge.

Overall, good food at a reasonable price - one really cannot complain.

I was in the foulest of moods and wasn't inclined to eat but somehow had to since I hadn't had anything in my tummy all day.

Luckily we were in the vicinity and decided to have a light meal here.

    I ordered 猪肝粥 ($3.80) while K had 皮蛋粥 ($3.80).

Both bowls of porridge arrived extremely hot. So hot my tongue got scalded and had to eat real slowly thereafter.

The pieces of liver in my porridge were a tad inconsistent in texture. Some were wonderfully tender while others were a bit tough. Still, I found the porridge palatable despite my less than voracious appetite.

However, after comparison, I much preferred K's choice since the porridge was of a thicker consistency with an adequate serving of century eggs. Strangely, it came with chicken instead of pork.

In any case, I felt a wee bit better after having some food and thought of trying Tong Ah's coffee and toast so off we went...

For photos, please visit Rubbish Eat Rubbish Grow.

Hooker Lily had a craving for porridge so we four went to Long Wall Porridge. We ordered: Porridge with century egg and lean pork ($3.60); 2 Frogs leg ($16); Fried tofu ($2.40); Sotong you-tiao ($6) and prawn paste chicken wings ($6).

SO AWESOME! I love the constancy and viscosity of the porridge, and it was very tasty. The sauce from the frog's leg on the porridge was spicy, salty, and slightly saltish, bursting with flavors. The tofu was firm on the outside and jelly inside.

I didn't think the sotong youtiao and the prawn-pasted chicken were worth the money. So little! Although they tasted good--at least this prawn-paste chicken had the taste of prawn paste--these two dishes cannot be matched with the porridge.

There are more seats on the second floor but it is stuffy and hot. You queue up below at the counter to order; and if you're sitting downstairs, you tell them your table number but if you're sitting upstairs, they will give you a number. Sort of like in a clinic. They will ping your number on the LCD and you raise up your hand like a good student and they deliver the food.

Minimum service. Love the noisy boisterous atmosphere, even love the heat. I usually eat here when there is no one but we went on a day near Chinese New Year and there were many people, but the food was still good and came fast. As I type this review, I want to go back and eat!!

Went on the Monday Night, 10pm. Still crowded with alot of customers.

Service wasnt that ideal. (Nothing to expect from a Coffeeshop)

Porridge is still maintaining the Taste. But the price is getting steep

Tiong Shian's provision of our local classic comfort food of steaming hot Cantonese-style porridge has made it a firm favourite with clubbers requiring post-alcohol sustenance because it's open till late. The coffeeshop in the heart of Chinatown spans 2 storeys, with air-conditioning available on the second floor.

    We ordered:

    1) Chicken Porridge ($3) Smooth with tiny discernible rice grains in a flavourful broth.

    2) San Lou Hor Fan ($6), which is arguably one of the better versions of this sliced fish noodle dish. This was clean, light and delectable

    3) Crispy Noodles with Seafood ($4), which didn't wow us as much as the aforementioned hor fan. Still, the seafood was fresh and plentiful

I have been patronizing this porridge shop for more than 15 years and everytime I come by Chinatown, it will be on my "must eat" list. You can choose to sit on the first floor or second floor, where the latter is less warmth.

Among the great variety/spread of porridge offerings, my favourite is still always the "fish slice" (sheng yu pian) porridge. Ths fish slices used are fresh and sweet. However, this is always the first one to be sold out and when it is gone, I will substitute it with the fish porridge (which will come with other parts of the fish with bones and head). On the other hand, the porridge is also nicely cooked (at least to my liking), which is not too watery.

Usually I will order an extra plate of "fish slice" (letting you have a feel of eating sashimi) and "you tiao" to go with the porridge.

You will have to queue and make your order and payment first. After which, the porridge will be served but normally you will need to wait for at least 20 minutes. Then you will be given a small plate, where you can help yourself with the spring onions and fried shallots.

Over the years, the price has gone up, remembering those days, a bowl of porridge would cost only $2.20 and now it is $3.50.

Nevertheless, its one of my favourite porridge shop. If you like porridge too, do come and try! But be prepared to wait for the long queue which is expected and also to "sweat" while eating as the ventilation of the shop is poor especially on a warm day! However, its just worth it!

    Must tries: Fish Slice Porridge

I'm astonished by the lack of reviews at this good old corner shop that serve up good old porridge for god knows how many years... Lack of patrons is definitely not the reason judging by the perpetual crowd that lasts well into the wee hours of the night...

However, reviews or no is hardly the point here as this long-standing stall has been serving up bowls n bowls of delicious congee to uncles in their mercedes to youngsters after clubbing n to yuppies after work!

Everyone has their own favourite here n kudos to the wide array of congee available....I'm a fan of century egg with pork congee coz i simply lurvve century egg with porridge! The gooey kinda acquired taste of century egg goes perfectly with e smooth congee! I'm never a fan of pork or chicken congee due to my constant fear of frozen poultry that juz taste awful IMHO but boy am i glad that the pork here is fresh and tasted very tender n juicy! A perfect bowl of goodness!

My guy lurvvvee the mixed pork congee to bits n declared it the best ever! For porky lovers esp the innards stuff like liver n intestines.. this should be it for u! I agreed that the fried intestines is quite a delight... it's crunchy n tasty n the saltiness is a good match with the congee... Fried intestines is truly quite a rare treat nowadays so innards fan should make a trip down to this old school joint!

A must-have item at this place would be the raw fish which is evident at every table.. The freshness n appetizing touch on this dish is undeniable! Thinly sliced raw fish coupled with fried onions n sliced chilli n ginger with a drizzle of sesame n soy is absolutely tantalizing! It's fresh so sans the fishy taste n it's super appetizing n it's great to share!

The great thing about this place is the piping hot congee remains warm for quite a while.. the congee is smooth n yummy but not soooo smooth that it turns watery which is good as u can still taste the grains a bit.. The ingredients r fresh n generous n tasty n tradtitional with nothing too fancy... Do add in a spoon of the soy sauce n a dash of the white pepper.. trust me.. it does greatly enhance your dining experience!

Overall, this place serves up truly yummy bowls of goodness where the portions r generous the ingredients r aplenty n fresh n the price is very affordable.. A bowl would set u back at $3.80? or so which is very reasonable in my books! I lurrve the atmosphere as well where people from all walks of life congregate at this little dingy corner of Chinatown to savour some of the best Singapore style congee..

Really.. i wonder why does all kinky n dodgy places have yummy makans? Geylang with sik wai sin n wen dao shi n sin huat n Keong Saik with kok sen n tiong shian n jalan besar with swee choon golden mile with thien kee etc? This is one of my all time fave so guys??? do come on down!

Must tries: raw fish, any of the congee!

I am surprised that nobody has written about this place yet. I have been eating here regularly for the past few years, and I think it is arguably one of the best porridge places in Singapore - not just in taste and variety, but for the good old traditional dishes.

Parking is horrible along the narrow Keong Saik road. If you can wedge your car between the long snaking line of cars along KS road, then you are so lucky you should buy 4D. Before you 'dio' 4D, you may also 'dio' summon as it is illegal to park there. If you can, grab a table where you have full view of your precious metal. Otherwise, you can wait for the parking coupon lots along the other side of the lane, or park in the underground multi-storey carpark next to the porridge place. Did I mention you have to suffer for good and cheap food?

You can order any of the flavours :

    Pork

Mixed pork ( includes meatballs, intestines, liver, fried intestines, etc)

    Liver

    Seafood

    Sliced fish

    Fish belly

    Chicken

    Pork with century egg

    Frog leg

Etc. The choices are mind-boggling. They also allow you to pick a mixture of your favourite ingredients at a small extra charge for each extra ingredient.

The porridge tastes wonderfully flavoured... Every table comes with a big bottle of soy sauce and dry sliced red chili. The best porridge award goes to the frog porridge... Tender, fresh, juicy sweet frogs with that incredible flavour leaching into the porridge... IT'S AMAZING.

You can also order frog with dried chili ala kung pow style or fried with spring onions in black sauce conveyed to you in a steaming claypot.

Special mention goes to raw fish - not many places have this anymore. This fresh, thinly sliced raw fish is marinated in sesame oil, julienned ginger, coriander, a touch of soy sauce, white pepper and add your own sliced red chili - accompanies the porridge wonderfully.

Something even rarer is the fried intestines ( Za Cheong ). Sounds gross but it's actually the pig's intestines deep fried to a crisp. Crunchy, savoury and a little flaky, it tastes better than it sounds and is absolutely addictive. Go early for this one. It gets sold out late at night.

Recently Tiong Shan has added Zi Char to its menu. I've randomly tried a few dishes and I daresay it's quite palatable.

Service is quick and efficient. They operate like a fast food joint. Order, get a receipt with your table number and then just sit and wait patiently. They NEVER forget your orders and they always serve promptly and they never serve a customer who arrived later than you because all the order slips are numbered and the time punched onto it. During peak hours, be prepared to wait up to 20min though.

Tiong Shan enjoys a continuous stream of customers deep into the night ( thanks to the nearby brothels) It is open 24 hours. I've even been here for 3am supper while working the graveyard shift (No, I don't work in the brothels) . With the crowd there, it doesn't even feel like it was the wee hours of the morning! I daresay late night is the best time to visit this place so that the chilly winds may help to cool you down while you eat or you might be too busy dabbing pearls of perspiration to really enjoy the food.

This place needs PARKING SPACE and AIR CON.

Must tries: Raw Fish, frog dishes, za cheong

    1. sweet minty i love the sliced raw fish they serve here too. used to have it regularly in the late 1990's. reading this review makes me want to go back there for some - its been nearly 10 years ago now!
