| not bad
My family loves Japanese cuisine and so considering today's a public holiday, we decided to head down to Suntec City to see what we've been missing out on with the changes while also checking out the Japanese restaurants there.
Our stomachs were rumbling as we looked at the menu. The spread is very appealing and the service staff gave us plenty of time to make our decisions.
It was nice of them to take beverage orders first. We ordered three cups of green tea.
We then proceeded with ordering the 7-kind sashimi set, a soft shell crab appetizer and our set meals. (sorry, i can't quite remember the set meals we ordered)
The sashimi was not bad. They came in thick slices as well. i would say it was slightly overpriced tho, for it's quality. Costing 55 for the dish, i expected a higher grade of freshness.
The appetizer was nice.
The set meals were huge! the ingredients are fresh and well worth the value. :)
the noise level in the place was high though. i'd say this restaurant isn't the place for you if you've got kids, the ambiance of the place is simply so Zen, screams would just ruin it all; dining pleasure and customer satisfaction.
i would still return to this restaurant, but probably to another branch. |

| good quality food, lack lustre service
with ref to my other food reviews for tonkichi shaw & ngee ann city, i'm a fan of these fried morsels or rather chunks of crispy food.
i have not been to this branch before even though it had been at the suntec fountain terrace for some years.
i went 2 weeks ago on a weekend and surprising there were no long Qs unlike at kenny rogers or tony romas. maybe locals prefer american food? or hearty ribs & chicken?
anyway it was good comfort that it was not crowded & we didnt have to wait for tables.
the place is newly renovated & looks chic with white & black decor. for this branch, they have sashimi & other japanese foods unlike at the ngee ann city branch which is mainly just the fried items.
but since we came mainly for the fried, heart blocking items, we just ordered the usual - mixed tonkatsu (pork loin & fillet) - both of which were succulent as usual but my personal preference is the fillet since its more tender. & we also ordered the fried prawns with crab croquettes. i love those creamy lil' ball-like fried crab croquettes. truthfully not too much crabby taste but its still yummy.
the service is nothing to rave about. sully waitresses. but well, at least they clear the dishes & bring the tea right?
the tonjiru - a soup with pork & veggies (which i upgraded from the normal miso soup for $4+) is still as yummy as i remembered but abit pricey for that small portion. If only they provided seconds for free...
rice & cabbage refill is free though... go wild on carbs if you're a rice bucket.
one thing about this branch is that they have these "booths" for like more private "couple" seating.. good for first dates if your date likes fried japanese foods. |

| not for weak-willed dieters
After having spent a coupla hrs shopping in Suntec, I figured that we had fulfiled our caloric usage target for the day, so we headed to 'fried food' haven Tonkichi for a very late dinner.
Not only did I have the seafood set, consisting of perfectly heart-stopping fried ebi, dory fillet, croquette, and a heap of cabbage (a rather miserable attempt to assuage one's guilt about clooging the arteries), we also shared a soft shell crab ;) Tonkichi's fried food stays crisp for a looong time!
Service was great too with my green tea refilled regularly and we didn't get rude impatient stares from the servers though we were the last to leave.
The menu's illustrations of its fried tonkatsu coupled with almost every table's order of tonkatsu set/bowl will test your discipline if you're on a diet..sure they have sashimi(which was rather mediocre last i tried) but I would advise you to stick with the tonkatsu and just work off the calories with a shopping spree... |

| What a cute place!
I came here with a group of friends for a birthday and had a great time. For some reason, I had expected a more... chic restaurant, but this place was actually quite homey. I thought it was great. The servers were authentically Japanese, as in the English was not super strong, but it wasn't so horrible that it was annoying. It was just cute.
The food was pretty good. The Sumika salad is fantastic (we started with one, and ended up ordering another one, that's how much we liked it), and we had a good number of skewers. I liked the thigh meat the best, but the bacon wrapped tomatoes were a close second. I also enjoyed the agedashi tofu, and was told that the spicy chicken appetizer was quite good. |

| Nice Jap
I had a business lunch here, and I ordered a Chirashi and Gindara set ($35), which was basically an assorted sashimi rice set with two slices of cod fish.
The sashimi was very fresh, and the cod fish was delightful.
We also ordered a sundried marinated puffer fish ($8) to try, and that was delicious. It tasted like bak kwa, but you know that its fish all the same.
The crispy salmon roll ($9) I thought was ok, the salmon wrapping it was fresh, but I couldn't quite taste the salmon bits inside, which was a waste.
The tea was very delicious, and it was only when we were settling the bill at the restaurant counter that I realised that they sell the tea too, one packet at $4.80).
We paid another $2 each to upgrade our free fruit (from the set) to a coffee pudding, which was exquisite. The smell of the coffee from the pudding was very strong, and the pudding went very well with the layer of the milk poured over it.
Certainly wouldn't mind visiting this restuarant again, though the ambience wasn't the best. |
