Gula & Chocolate High

Ever since CG introduced me to this place iv been hooked. Its slightly far for me to go but when I get the chance I will drag my frenz(esp those so used to Ben n Jerrys and other commercial Ice creams) to try out the yummy unique ice cream flavours

Since day 1 i never ever ever not get the Baileys and Bourbon ice cream. It has the just nice amount of alcohol to give it that kick yet not so much till those that cannot hold the liqour get very *wheeeee*.

Tried to convert the bf to it but hez not a liqour person(yeah shockin i know). he opted for the choco marshmellow and the yamilla(my 2nd fave) we both agreed the choc was indeed better and richer than awfully chocolate's ice cream and the marshmellow made it easier on the palette. Yamilla is naturally another fav of mine and thank god the bf liked it too. I mean its marzipan!!I love marzipan and together with vanilla and almond. Yum.

Tried the Gula Melaka too and yup another winner. The coconut in it just gives it more umph since im a sucker for ice cream with little extra ingredients in it. But wasnt abig fan of the nutella ice cream though. Found it abit on the tasteless side.

Oh and the hot chocolate. OMG. i was high on chocolate cos of that ok. Mixing it myself. Piping hot with the marshmellows. I think i scared my bf with the amnt of chocolate i ate and drank.

I like how u can play games at and just slack till late since it closes late.

Oh oh forgot. Try the waffles. Yumm..

Think price wise it is worth it. David makes his ice cream himself experimenting like a true teacher and he is very generous with ingredients. So i dnt mind payin a bit more for better quality ice cream. Esp my baileys. Yumm

Did get a chance to meet David, his lovely wife(at the taka food fair) and his business partner. David is always out to find out what his customers like/ dont like to improve his ice cream and to that i say "way to go!!!". and i like how all 3 are very involved with the store and just dont leave sum1 to run it all the time. Staff are also very friendly and nice(allowing us to try as many flavours as we want). Tho asking for more than 2 just feels weird to me. Wasting the tasting stick

Must Tries: Everything!!

Just to let you know that we are still in the midst of re-designing our nutella ice cream. As you have mentioned in your post, the versions that we have come up with so far hasn't quite hit the spot. We hope to have our new Nutella flavour ready by early September. The name will be changed to Hazel's Nuts : )

Increase in price quite a turn-off for all of us!

First got to know of u.d.d.e.r.s when they were at Takashimaya square early July. Friendly, helpful service. Though the small snag was the slightly overpriced Connoisseur-label flavours, such as the Mao Shan Durian one. Tried the premium liquor flavours too, some were better than the others (half lacked the liquor punch).
We all took an instant liking to this flavour and I had even bought a total of 4 take-home pints over 1 week (each at $14.80) back to the office and home to share. Encouraged all to go back for more at u.d.d.e.r.s shop at Goldhill (despite the not-so-convenient location). Frankly we felt it was a tad expensive, but this was justified to a certain extent by the rich flavour that comes very close to the fruit itself.
Got taken aback yesterday when my family finally got the chance to drive down to Goldhill to take away another few pints - the price had been "adjusted" to $15.90 in less than a month! Couldnt help but sense that after their introduction at Takashimaya, chance was leapt at to increase the price (and after seeing from the reviews that it was only $10.90 in June, now i really feel unjustified)! Surely despite rising costs etc, there should be some reasonableness in "adjusting" prices!
Well since the price was significantly increased, I decided on buying just one pint Mao Shan Durian (it was peak hour around 7pm and really painful to drop off to grab a quick pint takeaway as it is double yellow zigzag outside their shop). We look forward to the icecream in same spirit as before but sadly this same but more expensive pint was far too milky and flavour-wise definitely did not taste as good as before. Wondering if the quality of the durian used were not as good as before or simply that less of durian went into making this particular pint.
Now we'd rather buy the fruit and deep freeze it to have our own Mao Shan durian icecream (like we did before). Definitely more of the durian at a lower cost. Quite disappointed now.

Management Response: 6 Aug 2008 Hi Jiaxi,

Thank you very much for your honest feedback.

I responded to dreamer's post some time back and mentioned that the Mao Shan Wang at the old price of $10.90 was unsustainable and that there would be a price increase in the near future.

It is a difficult decision for me.

Mao Shan Wang is very expensive. Straits Times printed an article on durians a few weeks ago, and the price for Mao Shan Wang is at $15 to $25 dollars per kilo. And that's with the shell and the seeds.

Because of the high cost, I either have to stop producing this flavour, or increase the price so that it becomes meaningful for our business, and our customers can enjoy this flavour. Seeing that the flavour is quite popular, I decided to choose the latter course of action.

Therefore, we created the 'connoisseur' range to cater for ice creams that use very expensive ingredients. Without this higher priced range, I wouldn't have been able to offer the Mao Shan Wang, the Cherrybomb and the Tira-Miss-U flavours.

I understand your disappointment, and would like to apologise. The prices at Takashimaya were a test scenario, and we adjusted the prices when the fair was over.

I would like to state that the recipe for the Mao Shan Wang is unchanged. I give you my word on this. However, because we are using fresh fruits, and no batch of durians are identical - the flavour will vary somewhat from batch to batch. The same goes for our other flavours which uses fresh fruits, like our Fresh Mango Sorbet and Strawberry Fields, for example.

If you can contact me at 98462616, I'll arrange for a pint from the next batch of Mao Shan Wang to be delivered to you free of charge.

Sincerely,
David Yim

Vanilla Almond Marzipan

It's simply to die for if you like vanilla, almond and marzipan (which I do very much)

Suggestion for management if they are reading this - Tamade at Robertson Quay used to do this really creamy and rich coconut ice cream sundae with gula melaka sauce. Any chance we can expect something like that? ( I've tried your gula melaka ice cream but unfortunately it's a bit too light and tasteless for my liking)

Must Tries: vanilla almond marzipan

Management Response: 21 Jul 2008 Hi! Thanks very much for your review and comments!
Will check out the gula melaka sauce and the coconut ice cream that you've mentioned, but do give me time some as I'm working on a few other flavours at the moment.
I'll definitely improve the existing flavours if I can.

With regards to the gula melaka, strangely enough, feedback from a couple of other customers so far is that the gula is rather strong for them and a few weeks ago I was actually considering toning down the gula melaka, until I checked with other customers and they mentioned that it was sweet enough for them.

KING of Cat Mountain has been captured!

The hunt is over!

Udders has captured the KIng of Cat Mountain (Durian), and it has been cracked open , disembowelled, blended and turned into a smooth creamy icecream. It has retained its characteristic pong and sweetness! its yummy!!!

Bought a tub ($10.90) home for my mum (typical picky aunty type, hahaha...), Surprisingly NO complain from her! She commented that its nice and not overly sweet , just like the real durian, she likes it! hahaha....

Anyway I got the last tub of the day but eat-in is still available! HOHohoho....

Get it quick before the season ends! ermmm...there's also the D24 durain if you don't like Mao Shan Wang.

Meowwwww....( the last call of the "King"...)...errr..any1 has any idea why is the name Mao Shan Wang? What a weird name for a durian.

Must Tries: Mao Shan Wang

Management Response: 17 Jun 2008 Hi! We are currently selling this at our premium pricing:
$3.90 single scoop
$5.90 double scoop
$10.90 take-away pint
However, we may be raising the prices in the near future as the cost of the Mao Shan Wang (Cat Mountain King) is very expensive, and we have put generous amounts of the flesh in to ensure that the flavour and fragrance is intense.
Appreciate your understanding in this.
David

You should not miss this!

The ice-cream here is more expensive than at Icekimo or Island, but it's also much smoother and less icy in texture. There's a genuine alcohol kick in the flavours so-infused.

My favourites are the gula melaka with attap chee (experimental flavour, the chewiness of the seeds is an interesting touch), triple sec chocolate, mango (full of flavour like those Taiwanese mango desserts), and vanilla almond marzipan (light and sugary).

They also have board games that you can use for free, a board for people to suggest flavours, and I liked the cartoons used for the decor. Service was also warm, prompt and friendly when I was there. It's a great place for intimate gatherings with friends after meals.

Must Tries: triple sec chocolate, vanilla almond marzipan
