udderly overrated
Jun 14, 2009How many times have we read the papers or a magazine about the newest food joint and been disappointed to find that the hype overshadows the actual food? Unfortunately Udders is just another culinary casualty.
I read the Sunday Times today and came across the article about Udders. 2 new shops opening, franchising opportunities on the horizon... good signs of potential. I was extremely excited because I heard some of my office people mention a new ice cream place here.
So off I went today with girlfriend and mom in tow, keeping my excitement in check to be completely objective. The atompshere was nice. Casual and relaxed. If a little crowded. The chalkboard listing their 101 flavors showed some promise that this would be a good experience. But I was truly disappointed.
First of all I didn't appreciate the fact that their ice cream cabinets were messy and didn't look clean. Ok. But nevertheless the exciting ice cream flavors could surely make up for it. I was wrong.
I had the Vanilla bean ice cream and it was extremely flat. It almost tasted like there was no milk or cream in it, except for alot of thickener or some sort of emulsifier. If you've tasted Haagen Daaz you'll know the difference. This didn't taste like premium ice cream.
So I gave the Bailey's ice cream a try and the alcohol was a good surprise. However it had the same watery taste with that emulsifier type consistency. It must be their mix or something because the other flavors that my mom and girlfriend tried tasted the same.
I'll be honest to say I couldn't finish a cup. I really tried to like their ice cream (I love Bailey's) but I felt that it falls short of its peers like Tom's, Daily Scoop and Island Creamery. It's hard to mess up an ice cream but this was pretty unacceptable.
I think with their boss so aggressively pushing for expansion they do need to put a little more TLC in their ice cream before considering taking over the island.
I'm kinda disappointed but hoping they'll pull up their socks. -
Overrated and disappointing
Sep 29, 2009I read quite a lot of rave reviews about this place as well as many other bad reviews slamming it. This made my first visit there several nights ago with some friends worth it and pretty interesting as it was the first time all of us were having it.
But I shall give you our conclusion first: I think Udders is definitely overrated. The ice cream is not as awesome as many people make it out to be. (We are still wondering why there is even so much hype and event tie-ups from certain famous food bloggers?!?! Is there something about such endorsements we foodies should know about??)
Anyways, here are some of the reasons why Udders is overrated and disappointing:
- Only a few of the flavours are above average, such as the Orange Choc, and particularly those at the Connoirsseur range. Flavours in the cheaper Premium and Classic ranges are no match for really premium ice cream like Haagen Dazs
- Two of the flattest ice creams are Vanilla and Earl Grey. They lacked intensity and cannot match up to the alcoholic flavours. You can forget about eating them with the Connoirsseur range ice cream. They will taste like nothing
- Is the price for Connoirsseur range really justifiable? I think the idea that the most expensive ice cream is the best is simply due to the fact that the cheaper flavours really lack the richness and intensity in comparison. Also, alcohol might be expensive, but not THAT expensive...
- Anyone noticed how all the ice creams and even the sorbet taste chewy? I think many people do. Some people like it but I think many others pay to eat stuff like Haagen Dazs because they want ice cream that is NOT chewy... That factor really determines quality
So is there any saving grace? Yes there is... Udders alcoholic flavours are definitely unique. But it is unique for as long as other local ice cream parlours are not jumping on the bandwagon and making their own super alcoholic flavours.
They might just beat Udders at their own game.I also recommend this place for

thumbs down
Oct 24, 2009went to this ice-cream place with my classmates around 8pm. despite the availability of seats inside, we chose to sit outside because it was outrageously hot and stuffy despite 2 ceiling fans and air-conditioner units. the crew were courteous and friendly, but one thing I found a turn-off was the "HI WELCOME" shouted from the counter the moment we entered the shop. Sounded like some cheap giordano gimmick, or it's just me. I mean I've been to Jap restaurants where the waitresses/waiters greet us, but it's upclose and personal, making it more genuine. Guess this should be some marketing gimmick by their boss.
sampled a few ice-cream flavours, snickers bars honeycomb vanilla and rum rum raisin which tasted so-so. price was rather steep, $5.40 for both of these, but didn't bother much since it was just a try-out. the music played was rather bad, having poor mixes of english songs and even JAP omg!!!
to end off, this branch at golhill had poor ambience and only so-so ice cream. no much of a big hoo-hah despite several newspaper articles being displayed prominently at the front. i would choose a Ben n Jerry's or Island Creamery anything over this to dine, give the better ambience and more competitive prices. i

Mao Shan Wang + Awesomely Chocolate = Ultimate Fall-Sick Combination
Mar 18, 2010The title said it all! These 2 flavours are ultimately 'heaty', they are likely to make one fall sick soon. Real soon! My cousins & I were debating what flavours to have and we had to give all the alcoholic ones a miss, coz my cousins do not fancy alcohols. In the end, we settled for the Mao Shan Wang & the Awesomely Chocolate, which one of them commented it as a 2nd ultimate combination!! WHY??? Awesomely Chocolate was on the bitter side, while the Mao Shan Wang was on the sweet side, hence, he felt that he was actually eating durians on their own!! Yeah, he liked it!! =) And in my opinion, the Awesomely Chocolate is giving Reverso (from Island Creamery) and the Goodwood Park's Durian Feast a run for both their money. =) As a consumer, I'm not complaining! =D The service crew was really friendly, allowing us to sample different flavours before purchasing. He even recommended us to sample the Mao Shan Wang last, as it has the strongest taste of all. And he even answered my 'mountain turtle' question on the flavours on the blackboard!! Opps!! It's a pity that there is no Udders anywhere near Clementi (unless one travels to Toh Tuck area), but when the opportunity arises, I'll be back to consume a scoop of Amaretto Black!! =)Must Tries

Where I discuss cow porn and hot choc.
Jan 16, 2010You get the choc chips and the steamed milk separately (and marshmallows), and mix em' up yourself. You then get a lovely creamy and rich syrup that trickles down your throat like flying saucers don't.
I also like their alcohol-based ice creams, they don't stinge on the booze (but not enough that you get beer goggles), and still manage to not overwhelm the experience. I recommend their amaretto and rum and raisin flavours.
Decor-wise, I am made to feel a wee bit old given that they have a bit of that cutesy teenie vibe, but I like the blackboard where you can suggest flavours for them to experiment with. Unfortunately, they must practise censorship, since I don't see any really interesting suggestions (sambal kangkong, "sup torpedo" or cantonese "three egg congee" flavours are surely worth a shot).
Ice cream parlours are like the shoddy girlfriends of this acquaintance of mine - they come and go - but I think Udders has got something going on for it.I also recommend this place for

Not as good as the sky high reviews in newspapers etc
Jan 13, 2010I bought 3 scoops home to have my sister and I try out- orange dark chocolate, D 24 and mars/snickers. The serving size is extremely small, in relation to the price. Do not mix D 24 with the dark chocolate. I had a mild case of hives- durians and alcohol do not go well!
As I got on the bus and reached home in about 20 minutes, the dark chocolate ice cream had melted and turned into ice cream soup, in which I had to put it in the freezer for awhile. Must have been the alcohol. I suggest using more chocolate and increasing the portion size, or changing around the ingredients to prevent instant melting.
D 24 was too creamy and sweet. The mars/snickers ice cream sounds like a recipe for diabetes. Way, way, way, sweet. It's not the best thing to mix 2 types of chocolate into 1 for an ice cream flavor.
The store had only 6 customers in total but the music (annoying pop Miley Cyrus and Keisha's Tick Tock) songs were being blasted and the staff had to make me repeat my order,as one of them confused my D 24 for Earl Grey. Something could have been done about the sound system.Must Tries

Sweet Indulgence
Dec 27, 2009The freshly baked buttery waffle topped with our beloved pistachio and strawberry fields ice-cream, it was simply divine. Even our little sister prefers strawberry fields over her lychee martini and king mao shan wang!
A sweet treat for such a wonderful sunday outing.

Second time: better now
Dec 25, 2009This is my second trip to U.d.d.e.r.s Ice Cream which I can see from my condo window. The first time I visited I wasn't so impressed - a lot of focus on different flavors and variety but I didn't feel the quality was there.
This time I think there is improvement in the taste. My daughter had Chocolate Marshmallow and I had Black Amaretto. Both were flavorful but this time I felt they had a better creaminess/high fat content that made the texture on the tongue and aftertaste better. I'll revisit again in the future.
Service is fair, nothing special. They quickly offered tastes though we requested none (and actually didn't want any) which was OK, but it did feel they were going through a program and not paying attention to us. There were a bunch of crowded tables and it feels as though they are trying to cram a lot of seats in and sacrificing any atmosphere in the shop. I'd recommend walking out with your ice cream.
Anyhow, much better taste than opening day and if you like a carnival of flavors this is a good shop to go to.I also recommend this place for

Udders Redux
Nov 28, 2009Decided to bring my mum and daughter to Udders after swimming lessons at Farrer. This is my second try.
My mum had the Mao Shan Wan, my daughter had the strawberry and I had the Snickers again.
First thing is, the ice crystal problems has been solved unlike the first time. Saw the staff wiping the scoops dry...very good! I think the Snickers ice cream sweetness was more intense but I think still not sweet enough for me. I tried my daughter's strawberry and it was too sour. As for the Mao Shan Wan, the flavour was not strong enough.
I'm not sure but maybe it was the low butter milk fat content but I just do not find the ice cream here satisfying. My 70 year old mum said she preferred the ice cream at Island and B & J. And as for my 5 yr old daughter...she did not finish, which says alot.
Maybe I should try the waffle which everyone seems to be eating... I was hoping for better but sadly Udders did not satisfy again.
They should do something about the annoying sound coming out from the Acoustic Energy satellite speakers. It is not powerful enough for the place and the sound is jarring..not so much the choice of songs but the quality of sound.Spent about

Interesting Flavours
Nov 24, 2009Finally paid a visit on last Saturday after several recommendations from some frens.
I think we ordered like 5-7 flavours, cant really rem wat we had only vaguely rem we ordered:
- Choya lime sorbet (7/10)
- Tira-miss-u (8/10)
- rum rasin (7/10)
- cookies and cream (9/10)
and some other soursop flavours.
I requested for my Choya sorbet and Tiramisu order to be served in separate bowls since they are of diff nature, but was turned down by one of the waiteress.
I requested another 2x again, and was rejected again.
At first I couldnt understand why cos she kept on repeating that it's a double scoop order and she CANNOT separate the 2 scoops.
On hindsight, we realised it was probably due to costings, cos if the 2 scoops were to be separated, I would have to pay for TWO SINGLE scoops.
Fine, but why can't she explain ?!
If she hv done that, I would hv paid for it.
Cos I was pretty disgusted towards the end.
Imagine some chocolaty ice cream and sorbet blend in together when they melted?! Yucks!
I would hv paid to separate them.
Besides, staff of an ice cream store shd hv basic knowledge of wat flavours can be/ cannot be mixed together right?
Point to note, they have plenty of staff ard at the counter, but none were attentive enough.
1 can be serving a customer (to taste the ice cream), another 2 can were standing there and waiting for customers to react first.
Seriously, I heart the flavours, but I am also a sucker for service eh.Must Tries
