Hidden Gem!
Aug 27, 2008Recommended by a friend, I recently visited Verve Bistro in Gillman Village, and was I pleased I did! What was originally planned as a few drinks with friends turned into an immensley enjoyable evening of great food and wine. The setting is both relaxed and stylish, the service friendly and attentive and the menu varied and enticing. I would recommend the pizzas, especially the duck with hoisin sauce - unusual as it sounds, it was wonderful! The chocolate brownies for dessert were scrumptious. The cocktails we started with had a freshness about them rarely found in other bistros in town and the wine list, whilst not extensive, was varied (and very reasonably priced) and contained more than a few labels I would love to try. If you are looking for somewhere new to try then give Verve a visit - i'm sure that you'll go back for more. I've been three times this month!Must Tries

Death of One Brings Forth New Life
Aug 26, 2008No, I did not get that title from some famous poet in the sixteenth century, just in case you were thinking. However, I thought the statement summarised this dining experience. The previous occupants of this place, Turquoise Room, had a special place in my heart as it was a place where I brought my mom for a wonderful mother's day treat about two years back. So with its closure, I felt like a part of my history had suddenly disappeared.
Or has it?
Enters Verve Bar and Bistro. Started by two individuals from the financial industry, Verve brings new life at the otherwise quiet Gillman Village. While there is a slight change in branding, I was happy to learn that the crux of the kitchen crew such as the chefs were all retained for continuation and many of the popular dishes by Turquoise Room such as the Duck Confit Pasta would still continue to be on the menu.
However, there are a few new innovations, and that was what I was here to check out in a tasting session.
I started with the Apple Martini ($18), which has to be one of the better martinis I have ever tasted. With the juice of a whole green apple with apple bits in the drink, it is very refreshing just like setting of the restaurant. I also tried the Strawberry Cosmopolitan ($18), which was much lighter than the other Cosmos that I have tried. My final cocktail came in the Mojito Sorbet ($20), which was yet another refershing cocktail. Despite the drinks feeling light, the alcohol started adding up so it was time for some food.
For starters I had the Grilled Portobello Mushrooms ($14), which had a very strong vinegar taste and while the cheese dressing added a drier tone to the dish, I found it to be a little too "juicy" for my comfort zone. What was interesting though, is that mushroom sizes were very consistent, something that you only get in good-class restaurants.
I then tried the Calamari Fritti with Garlic Cream ($16), which I really enjoyed. I liked how unlike the usual calarmi rings that I am used to they fried up the different parts of the squid, which was very fresh and succulent. The garlic cream was also a great complimentary sauce, which is lighter than the usual mayonnaise sauce - in line with the theme of the restaurant.
I then tried the Fish Cakes ($12), which came with a nice salsa dip which had a srong herb element but not too spicy. The fish cake is unique in that one can barely taste the fish as it is masked by the potato and onion mix. Thus, a choice even if you do not like to eat fish.
Next on the menu was the Pizzas. If you do look at the pizzas, you would find that the names are not your conventional pizza names, but it does have an interesting underlying theme which I shall leave it for you readers to figure out. The first pizza I tried was Pizza Appolonia ($16), which was a combination of feta cheese and sundried tomatoes. The ingredients on the pizza bed blended well and will appeal to those who like their pizzas with slightly charred edges. Next was the Pizza Enzo ($16) which was an interesting innovation of peking duck on pizza. Peppered with spring onion, one can really taste the saltiness of the thick duck gravy on the pizza. Very unique indeed.
The next dish on this tasting menu was the Lamb Rack with Mint Yogurt ($32). The lamb was done very well - medium rare and succulent. Unfortunately, I found that the mint sauce had a little too contrasting a taste for my liking. Thus, I would recommend that anyone eating this dish enjoy the lamb by itself.
Finally, lunch ended with the Duck Confit Pasta ($26). It was done al dente and the duck was crispy and melted in the mouth.
I would have loved to try more, but after the above I can sufficiently say that it was more than what a body could handle. One thing I really liked was the bigger variety of wine selection due to an increase in suppliers. I really enjoyed the Sauvignon Blanc Semillon housepour from Southeast Australia. If you are looking for quaint hideout with general good food, Verve is a must check out.Must Tries

Not exactly family friendly
Sep 8, 2008I agree totally with Hoongy.
The food was great, ambiance was wonderful as well even though I went to the place on Sunday for lunch.
But on the flip side, the thing that would make me think twice about going back there again is the kind of "attitude" / "look" some of the other patrons there.
We were giving while we were celebrating my friend's birthday.
I will admit that we were alittle noisy but what did they expect from people (more than 20 of us there)?
The kids were kinda noisy too but it's not like they were running around screaming their heads off kinda thing.
Anyway, IMHO, this is a nice place with great food... but I don't think I'll be back there anytime soon as it doesn't seem to "welcome" kids / families / large group gatherings.
*To the management, it's of no fault of yours but the patrons were kinda too "atas" / "head in the air" for my liking.Must Tries
Everything that I have tried was wonderful... but can't say much about the portions.

Excellent pizza and pasta
Feb 24, 2010I went with my friend to this place for a late night bite last week. We werent expecting something great so we were pleasantly surprised when the food turned out better than our usual favorite Da Paolo. Every bite of the pasta makes you yearn for the next (have you had those where it tastes like the sauce is separated from the pasta itself? Those are really bad), we will definitely be returning to try their other menu items. -
industrial ingredients
Jan 23, 2010Went for a cosy dinner with my husband. While Verve offers the most magnificient setting, the magic is sadly not reflected in the plate. menu is simple which we like but usually, when the menu is straightforward, you make the difference with top quality ingredients which is absolutly not the case here. As a starter, my husband ordered the aubergine parmigiane: no taste as the mozarella cheese is industrial. A few dried up leave salad dressing less on the side! I ordered the bruschetta which consists of hard rock think slices of bread ( instead of pain de campagne or even ciabbatta) and a blend of a few vegetables. Tasteless. Tried adding black pepper but their pepper is again tasteless and the salt was sticking inside.as a main course, my husband ordered the chicken ($34!!!). Its description was mouth watering: tender chicken in filo pastry and a mushroom sauce. The reality is a plate with a wrap , a very tiny amount of sauce and a few dried out salad leaves.I ordered the greek salad: all the ingredients are industrial: tasteless olives, 4 cubes of tasteless scarily square feta cheese ( straight out of the jar!) and the same old salad leaves that has been out of freshness a long time ago. I asked for some bread to go with it, pizza bread or any other bread. It took them 20 minutes to bring me 4 slices of the same bread used in the bruschetta. The portion are also on the very small side.We ordered a calvados apple crumble to share. Not cooked enough and the apples were very well hidden. No trace of calvados and we had to remind the waiter that the menu states it comes with ice cream. The scoop of old vanilla was gorgeous!
Such a pity as the setting is wonderful. Just hope they get their acts together in the kitchen and start delivering what they promise. Simple food which means ingredients with taste -
This is a pizza place
Jan 20, 2010The location resembles Rochester Park but is a little off the beaten track. Anyway, the romantic ambience make this place look very good. Wooed by the favourable reviews we decided to have dinner there on a Tuesday night.
Food:
Food prices are okay, but the quality was not.
I ordered a squid salad as a main course. What I got was garlic, and again garlic with squid and 2 salad leafs on the side.
My fiancee had a salad with goat cheese - except there was no goat cheese. When we pointed that out to the waiter she acknowledged our remarks but that was about it.
The only thing worth the trip was actually the pizza. Fresh, good mozarella, basil and a crisp crust contributed a quality pizza. But this pizza costs you minimum SGD 20.
Drinks:
Heavily overprized. I tried a Mijito Sorbet and I dearly regretted having paid SGD 20 for that drink. The cocktails all go for around SGD 18 and are rather small and not that stunning. However, the house wine - a sauvignon blanc - was alright.
Service:
Our waitress was very friendly and helpful.I also recommend this place for

small, cosy & comforting
Jan 9, 2010Verve is comforting.
The linguine, lovingly handmade, is thickly cut, starchy and chewy - you could say it was al dente, just the way it should be done. I personally loved the cherry tomatoes they added to the Vongole, it adds a bit of colour into the dish, and I think is a fantastic accompaniment to the clams. I didn't eat the Carbonara, but my friend who did loved it because it didn't feel heavy.
A pizza is like a blank canvas. A personality is created with the toppings one scatters over them. Enzo (the Peking duck one) would be a modern-day, East-meets-West, elegant, not-too-coy art piece. The sauce is amazing, whatever it is. I like the fact that it isn't too sweet. But the best part is that it is semi-Oriental appeals to both the traditional and the young at the same time. In short: I love.
The highlight of the Calamari was the aioli dip full of garlicky goodness. At $16 per plate of calamari, I cannot help but feel that it's a tad pricey, but it's a fantastic starter though - I like the batter used, and the aioli dip is to die for.
Service was one of the best that I've experienced in Singapore, with the hosts actually interested to know how the experience at Verve was. We got shots of Verve's homemade gelato on the house, just because we asked. The Vanilla Cognac was interesting, especially the fact that they use real vanilla beans.
To conclude, Verve serves food that you would be proud of serving in your own home. And you cannot help but feel attached to the place after you leave. You feel as though you've known the staff for the longest time, and as you step out of the door into the hot, humid afternoon, you're already looking forward to your next visit.I also recommend this place for

Hidden and peaceful enough for Celebrities
Dec 28, 2009Got to know the restaurent only because I pass by its depot road side banner every week. Checked out the website which looks good so went down for dinner. The ambiance was impressively tranquil and the crowd surprisingly thin on a Friday night given its lovely surrounding.
Enjoyed their free appetizer (bread with virgin oil and black vinegar). Pizza smells and taste good. But the pasta dishes were not all equally good. Forgot what everyone ordered exactly so no further elaboration. For those who love a quiet alfresco meal by the woods, I can't think of a better location then verve @ gillman which is like Dempsey without the priciness and crowd.
A must-consider restaurent if you want a romantic dinner to impress your date.I also recommend this place for

Off the beaten track
Aug 16, 2009Verve Bar and Bistro is housed in a white building, amidst a backdrop of greenery and large open space, which is a soothing relief from the concrete jungle that we have gotten so accustomed to. We were first greeted by the alfresco deck, which comes with cool white deck furnishings and tikki torches that contributes to the rustic feel of this place. Looks like a great place to have an ice cold beer with your best buds during a balmy, breezy evening.
We began the meal with a few error-proof starters - Calamari Fritti and Fish Cakes. Both came accompanied with their complimenting dips. The former was partnered with Garlic Cream, that was light and the latter came with a salsa dip, which was tangy and just right in terms of spiciness. The Fish Cakes reminded us of a Thai dish and had a crunch outside whilst maintaining a tender pulp on the inside.
With this being an Italian bistro, we couldn't leave without trying their thin crust pizzas. Vitto pizza was a classic magarita pizza - good ol' tomato and cheese which was baked crisp and crusty. I, however found it a bit salty after the second piece. We had a taste of China next with its Enzo pizza, which was peking duck pizza. It really felt like we were eating peking duck but on dough instead of crepe! The essence of this popular chinese dish was also captured in its sweet sauce and sprinkling of spring onions.
Its linguini with duck confit was one particular dish that we enjoyed. The pasta was al-dente and tasted fresh and homemade, and was topped with generous slices of duck meat and bacon strips.
For desserts, we chose to share gelato and went with a good mix of yuzu sorbet, dark chocolate and coffee with Tia Maria. Yuzu sorbet was the table's unanimous favourite flavour.

Sub Par Service Spoils it All
Aug 6, 2009I got to know about Verve Bar & Bistro when I happened to pass by that area recently, only to realise that the former 'The Turquoise Room' had gone for good. TTR had been a place of fond memories for my gf and I, as we've previously celebrated a memorable occasion there, and their warm and attentive crew left us with a great impression.
Just recently, I decided to revisit the place with my gf on our anniversary, but found that service at Verve was nothing close to the former TTR's. For starters, after we were seated and ready to order food, the waiters and waitresses were nowhere to be found. And when they finally appeared, it seemed almost impossible to catch their attention. In the end, I had to make my way to the counter several times to get them over to our table for orders. There was even an instance when I pressed on the service bell at the counter for several times and nobody appeared.
Food-wise, we ordered a Roast Chicken Caesar Salad, a regular-size Tandoori Chicken Pizza and a Crab in Tomato Cream Sauce Pasta; we also ordered an Iced Latte and an Iced Mocha. The salad was passable--no wow in the way it was presented and rather sparing in portion--but the real bacon bits and shaved Parmesan cheese did jazz up the appetizer somehow. As for the pizza, I'd probably cross it out the next time--if I do return, that is.
We were impressed by the pasta though; it was a delicious combination of pasta and seafood, with linguine cooked in creamy tomato sauce, laced with generous servings of fresh crab meat--that was one item that got the most nods from us. The Iced Latte and Iced Mocha were pretty decent too.
Didn't get to try their popular Enzo pizza though, coz they ran out of duck that day... :(Must Tries

Good service with decent food
Feb 24, 2009came here with wife and 2 kids on a Sat lunch. When we arrived it was totally empty and i was a little concerned. Place is nicely decorated better than the old Turquiose room.
We ordered :
1) Vongole pasta
2) Bolognise for my kid.
3) 12 inch pizza mozzarella for me and smaller kid.
The food was quite ok but i think we did not do them justice by ordering normal itallian pastas. They do the pasta quite al dente and is well done for my kids spahgetti but for my wife's it was slightly on the undercooked side as the pasta had a powdery centre. The sauce was good for the vongole and the pizza was very nice.
What we liked about the place is the service when it rained heavily. The staff actually helped ferry us one by one with their umbrella to my car parked outside. Now that is good service!I also recommend this place for

Peking Duck Italiano
Feb 9, 2009I had dinner recently at this joint. I was not disappointed.
I started off with the calamari which was anything but rubbery and was fresh enough on the inside to be bitten off at the first go. The dipping sauce, homemade, made all the difference to this otherwise very ordinary dish. Oh yes, the batter was light so you didn't feel as if you were chewing off flour.
I had the Enzo pizza which was Peking Duck Italian style. Well balanced and generous portion of the duck. The sauce wasn't too sweet and it was balanced off with a sprinkling of parsley.
I tried the lamb and the steak as well. Both meats were juicy and tender even though we asked for medium well. The mushroom sauce for the steak was not overbearing and put on the side so that the right amount could be used at the diner's preference.
But when it came to the desserts, the banana thingy (can't remember what it's called) was less than desired and tasted almost haphazardly put together. We also has the waffles which was much better and a selection of their Gelato. Try the vanilla and cognac, very balanced taste and not too strong for the nostril.
The service was impeccable and attentive. They were not intrusive and bantered easily when we wanted to know more about the joint.Must Tries

Would love to go back again
Dec 28, 2008The group of girls were looking for a chilling place to hangout after our dinner and one of my friend recommended this place.
The moment I stepped in, I'm in love with the ambiance and setting there. We were first greeted with a few friendly ladies and as there were not much crowds there, we were able to choose any seats freely and we opted for a sofa seat of course.
Since we only ordered a few drinks and a bottle of white wine, there isn't much comments I can write about except on their good service. The staff there were really friendly.
