thumbs up for food, thumbs down for service

the queue to get seated is exceptionally long even on weekdays.. after u get a seat, u still have to queue at the cashier to order your food.

twice, i was seated by the "dessert preparation area", which was a wooden suspended plank as a table with two seats. especially at lunch hours, the rude staff will try to claim seats at that area too to take their lunch (for f&b line, i thought the staff usually will eat at off peak hours?). if not, they will gather there and chit chat or change into their uniforms when start/end of shift -_-"

the chicken sausage rice and the meat with salted fish - i feel is a waste of money. my boyfriend had the salted fish one, only 1 piece! and u pay so much somemore.

the nice ones include crispy noodles, watercress drink, chicken wings (but a bit oily)

din try the dessert cos too ex

Waste of time

I have heard to much about this "cha chan ting" in IMM so on a Sunday decided to try it out with my family.

The queue is long, not for an impatient person like me. The seats are cramp, space are tight & uncomfortable. Everybody were sitting so closely that I am so conscious of other's eavesdropping even thou' there's nothing to hide.

The furniture is canteen style so tables & chairs are fixed. No moving around & if you have fat people or more than 6 in a group, good luck cos it's not gonna fit you guys in. Sorry for saying this again but if you are larger than average, this place is not welcoming for you because of the space.

The food is simply so over rated. Yes portion is huge but where's the "ooohhh" factor? I can't have something that fills me up & yet at the same time, leaving me high & dry. The food are salty for a start. The prawn paste chicken that everybody was raving about didn't work for me. I can an even better job at it.

What a waste of time travelling as well.

Space savvy

Wan Chai Tea Room is in a good location, being right in front of everyone's favourite Daiso. However, the space it occupies wouldn't ordinarily be considered great - an awkward space at the confluence of a few thoroughfares on Level 3 of IMM. Judging by the queues at the shop though, the awkwardness clearly sorted itself out. Perhaps it's just as well that the entire restaurant is rather crammed and always so busy - makes it feel like Hong Kong =) not sure if that was a deliberate branding strategy...

Anyways. We went there today because we'd read a review in Weekend TODAY. We ticked off a few items and got places fairly quickly. Beef brisket noodles came first - quite good. We were pleased. The pork floss toast looked rather odd, but tasted better than it appeared. Prawn paste chicken wings came straight from the stove - I liked them very much. Reminded me of the fried wings I used to eat after swimming lessons when I was a kid =)

By the time we'd worked through those items, the crispy chicken and mushroom baked rice arrived (exactly at 12 noon, as they promised). It was a really generous portion (I noticed this was also the case for several other items at other tables), and a well cooked dish. The chicken remained crispy despite the blanket of brown gravy around the plump rice grains and cute-as-a-button mushrooms (no pun intended). Roughly chopped up carrots lifted the dish and gave it more crunch. Better still, a large bowl of wonderful pork rib, date and corn soup came with the rice! Hmm.

We went away surprisingly stuffed, and happy for a quick and inexpensive Hong Kong fix =)

Good wanton mee, but that's all I like!

This place is most likely full house during meal times. Cos their location is strategically located at the most prominent spot on the 3rd floor outside Daiso.

I like the wanton mee. It serves Hongkong noodle, not the normal type of noodle we have at our coffeeshop. The portion's just right for me!

But other than that, I've nothing to look forward to. Didn't like the fried wanton, too much meat, not enough of skin, it makes the dish not as crispy as preferred. I'm not a toast fan as well.

I ordered a desert, Yuan Yang Paste. I expect the almond and black sesame paste to be served as two separate halves, beautifully presented like in any other desert store or hongkong eatery. But it is disappointing. I just have a bowl of it that has almond and black sesame already mixed. And the paste is too watery.

Drinks, just normal! Hot lemon tea's a safe bet. That's about it.

A nice little place to sit, rest & eat

If you like HK food, this is a must try IMHO.

Please see the picts.

Toast - yummy. My 5 yo son loved it

Prawn paste chicken - they don't make it till you order it. So it's HOT!!! & Crispy

Baked Rice - Pork chop + Pineapples with baked cheese... It's quite ok... Alittle like eating a Hawaiian pizza with rice...

Yuan Yang - Coffee + Tea... superb... the coffee is thick, the tea is awesome & milk is creamy. @ 1.20 this is a must try.

Soya Bean drink - my nightmare... coz I have gout. But I still love it. *It's def better than the one in Geylang.

I rated Ambience alittle low is coz... tons of people are alwayz "waiting" for you to finish... and the power of that place keeps tripping.

Value... Not too bad for that place.

Service. nice and friendly waitress and service attendants.
