Boss treated me to a nice Japanese lunch yesterday at Yamagawa. It’s hidden at one isolated corner in The Plaza along Beach Road. It’s just beside my workplace though.

And so Cecilia was saying that she didn’t know about this restaurant too, until another colleague brought her there some time ago. Seriously, it’s at one hidden corner and no one will know about it unless by word of mouth. So my guess is it should be quite authentic for it to survive so long given its horrible location.

Stingy restaurant

Visited this restaurant after reading about the positive reviews. We are a group of 20 people who booked the private rooms. The service staff were friendly and polite, but would be reluctant to process our orders if they think we're ordering too much, or refuse some of our orders without telling us.
For example, we tried to order salmon sashimi, but they insisted on serving mixed sashimi. Orders generally take a long time, even for sashimi. I would understand some food need to be cooked only when ordered, but for sashimi, why did it take as long, if not longer. Sometimes we would wait for more than 15 mins for each order.
They would push for us to try their selection, instead of letting us select our own orders upon arrive, and then serve us loads of sushi, and higher quantity of dishes we did not like - such as stir fried beef - while only giving us pitiful portions of food that should be more popular - 4 plates of mixed tempura(2 ebi per plate).
In the end, we were allowed 1 round of either single scoop ice cream or watermelon for desserts - is this the norm for ala carte buffet?
As for the room, the arrangement was a disappointment - a single long row of table stretching 2 narrow rooms. The place just wasn't designed for a large group. The rooms were hot and stuff, and we had to bring a single fan from the corner and set it up outselves. One fan for 2 rooms.
Although the food tasted nice, but their strategy for scrimping on orders irked me, and I'l just writing to disclose what they try to pull, and their very limited menu for ala carte buffet.
You've been warned.

Spent ard $50 for the wkday buffet dinner. Sashimi was fresh. service was prompt. wonderful place for special occassion. Everything was great but we would have hope for cold soba / teppanyaki chicken to be included in the menu. However something we noticed was most customers are there for their ala carte /set meals.

Who would have thought that one would find a Japanese restaurant at some corner of the Plaza at Beach Road?

Well, thanks to a friend's recommendation, I managed to find this good value for money eatery that offers Japanese fare at reasonable prices.

A simple casual eatery set-up, we started with the sashimi fuji, which came with three pieces of salmon, tuna, yellow tail, swordfish and scallop. We also tried the sushi platter and both the sashimi and sushi were fresh and was served chilled.

We also tried the tempura moriwase, which came with three prawns, a piece of green pepper and carrots. Relatively fresh oil was used and the fried pieces tasted good.

From the grilled items we tried the beef teppanyaki and the chicken teppanyaki. Both dishes came out quite well and we were surprised as the good quality of the beef used despite the reasonable price point.

Ended the meal with a garlic fried rice. While it had a nice strong garlic taste, part of the rice was overcooked and hence as a little tough to eat.

Overall though, food was reasonable given the price point. What make this place stand out other than its good value for money food though is its hospitality. Despite staying past closing hours, at no point were we chased out. Private rooms are also available.
