Tasty affordable vegetarian fare in Geylang
Jan 19, 2009It isn't an exaggeration when I say that after eating at Yes Natural I'm finally convinced that Chinese vegetarian food can actually be healthy and good for you. Most Chinese vege places in Singapore tend to serve really oily, yucky gluten stuff so this is a refreshing change. Also, despite the plethora of eating establishments in Geylang, not many of them actually serve truly decent food, let alone healthy fare. So this place really stands out. It's one of my all-time favourite places to eat in Geylang and when I'm in the area I keep coming back for a few of their 'zhao pai cai' (specialty dishes).
So let's get to the nitty-gritty:
Food
=====
The food here is healthy, light and fresh without skimping on flavour, but can be hearty when it wants to. The following are from their a la carte menu but they do a separate set menu for groups as well.
Stone pot rice ($6.50) - My fave dish, this is basically like claypot rice but healthier. Stewed, juicy shittake mushrooms with kailan, strewn over brown rice that's bursting with flavour, and covered with a sprinkling of vegetarian floss.
Almond sauce noodles ($5.50) - This is thin udon noodles with a nutty, savoury sauce topped with julienned carrots, other vegetables and watercress. Very good, very tasty, and the veges lend just the right amount of crispness to the smooth firm bite of the noodles.
Baked cheese rice ($6) - Okay not so healthy with all that cheese but still good (and I think it beats nydc's baked rice). It's brown rice covered with tomato sauce, cooked with chunks of mock meat, vegetables, mushroom and covered in bubbly mozzarella cheese.
Korean pancake (about $6 I think) - This is a vegetable pancake that's crispy on the outside, chewy and savoury on the inside, with that sour tang of kimchi. Can sometimes be a bit dry though so be warned, nevertheless it's a good eat and surprisingly filling.
Three treasures rice ($5) - Stir-fried vegetables (you have your pick of three) with special brown rice. It's not bad, nothing to shout about, but the rice does come sprinkled with some kind of healthy seaweed-type floss that makes it super yummy.
All dishes come with a free soup of the day, which is usually a Chinese broth like stewed peanut soup. All in all a very good deal - but the drinks - organic sparkling juices, cane juices etc - are at $3.50 a pop though.
Ambience
========
Usually quite busy and hectic, even on a weekday night. On weekends the big tables are packed out by families (a sign of good business I suppose) but you can still get a table for two. The decor is simple and a bit cheesy but honestly you come to a place like this for the food, not for romancing your girl.
Service
=======
Competent and knowledgeable. The service staff are all middle-aged aunties who are generally quite nice and smiley (with one or two grumpy exceptions), although their English is limited you can still get by. Food comes promptly and piping hot, but it takes longer on weekends, and it depends on what you order - the baked cheese rice takes 20 minutes.
The place takes its eco-theme quite seriously so menus are plastic and you can order by using a provided crayon to mark the boxes next to the food items on the menu (save the trees!). Also their takeaway packaging are biodegradable paper products, not styrofoam - although their tubs have plastic covers though, hmm.
To sum it up, it's a gem and a great place to check out when you're tired of all the artery-clogging food that Geylang's famous for. They also have a bakery next door, their wholemeal bread isn't great but the other baked goods look nice (haven't tried so can't comment on them!).Must Tries

stonepot rice
Sep 24, 2009Lunch was @ Yes F&B vegetarian restaurant(geylang).
There are several yes f&b trading in sp mainly selling breads & organic products.
The main restuarant is situated right in geylang, beside the yes f&b bakery.
The restaurant uses 2 colours- white and green as it symbolises nature and purity.
They have special menu of the day which is only available on mon, wed & fri.
Menu is pretty simple- Appetitizers, rice, salads and beverage. The popular items here are the pocket salad, almond sauce noodles, stonepot rice and the baked cheese rice. All the rice used is the organic brown rice so therefore you will get baked cheese brown rice/ spaghetti.
A special dish that i have ordered : The stonepot rice while is the ''bimbimbap'' in korean cuisine. Their version is different- Brown rice, veggies, mushrms and pumpkin. I substitute the pumpkin for some side salad. The serving is quite huge for one person. The mushrm were well- braised, veggies were crunchy and i like the sauce that is used for the rice (not salty).
Svc here is quite friendly. Price are resonable as well. Do drop by if you are looking for vegetarian food in geylang area.Must Tries

Pocket Salad - YES Natural
Feb 22, 2010As a vegetarian, I am looking for creative, delectable vegetarian food if I need to travel quite a distance to a particular vegetarian eatery. I wanted to try the Korean Pancake but it was not available. Therefore I ordered their Pocket Salad and Homemade Dark Plum Juice.
Like their Pocket Salad - light, crunchy and refreshing... If there is other sauce option beside mayo, that would be good!
Another item on the menu that I like is the Stone Pot Rice. It is simple and yet gives satisfaction. Piping hot food is really appetizing. Oh, it comes with pickled papaya or pickled pumpkin.
Sometimes, vegetarian eatery do serves items which we don't really get elsewhere - like their pumpkin pickle which I like it very much. It also the same texture of those green papaya pickle but pumpkin is full of goodness.
Tasted Pickled Pumpkin? No, maybe, make a trip there and hopefully, they have it. The place is real easy to locate, it is at the buildings just outside Aljunied MRT (left side - few shops down the road).
