Sunday brunches are usually convenient affairs, 'eat-on-the-way' concept. Decided to pop by Amoy Street to see if I had some luck with the usually bustling hawker centre. At first glance, it is almost a ghost town on Sundays save for a couple of stalls that decided to feed the hungry. I can easily name 5 stalls open; Lor Mee, Teochew Fish Porridge, Chicken Rice, Char Kuay Teow and a Bakery.
Lor Mee beckoned with the snaking queues, bless their nifty hands...at least the wait was not excruciating. At least 15 minutes will suffice, unless of course you end up with someone taking away 12 sets, like in my case.
Lor Mee ($2/$3)
They use ngoh hiang, boiled shark's meat, pork belly bits and fritters in replacement of the ever popular shark meat fritters at Tanjong Pagar Market and Tiong Bahru Market. The soup is more flavourful though it was served just warm not piping hot. The noodles did not reek of the usual thick, cloying noodle taste. For once, the combination of diced garlic and splashes of vinegar was so complementary! On the most embarrassing note, I did not burp lor mee thereafter.
Normally for places that include 'famous' as part of their signboards, I'd say they are deceiving..but for Yuan Chun, it's well deserving!
